What is Burano famous for?
It's brightly coloured houses and also lace.
Burano's small and brightly coloured homes follow a specific system which has been in place since its golden age of development. If someone would like to re paint a home they have to apply for strict planning permission and they have to paint it a colour which has been designated to that property building.

My Top 5 Things to Do in Burano: A Vibrant Getaway from Venice
Wander Through the Colourful Streets
Burano’s most iconic feature is its bright, multicolored houses. Strolling through these vibrant streets feels like walking inside a postcard. Legend has it that the houses were painted in bold colors to help fishermen find their way home in the fog. Whether you’re snapping photos or simply soaking up the atmosphere, getting lost in Burano’s kaleidoscopic lanes is a must.
Visit Piazza Galuppi
The heart of Burano is Piazza Galuppi, the island’s main square. Lined with quaint cafes, gelato shops, and souvenir stands, it’s the perfect place to relax and watch the world go by. You’ll also find the San Martino Church here, famous for its leaning bell tower—Burano’s own “Leaning Tower of Pisa.” The square is often included in Burano tours, giving visitors a deeper understanding of the island’s culture and history.
Explore Burano’s Lace Museum
Burano is renowned for its lace-making heritage, dating back to the 16th century. The Museo del Merletto (Lace Museum) is the perfect place to learn about this delicate art form. Inside, you’ll see intricate lacework and learn about the painstaking techniques passed down through generations. Many Murano-Burano-Venice tours include a stop at this museum, offering a glimpse into Burano’s past and present craftsmanship.
Indulge in Local Cuisine
No visit to Burano is complete without tasting its delicious seafood. Being a fishing island, Burano offers some of the freshest seafood dishes in Venice. Try the risotto de gò, a traditional dish made with goby fish caught in the lagoon. Pair it with a glass of local wine and enjoy a meal with views of the colorful canals.
Combine Your Trip with Murano
Many travelers pair a visit to Burano with a trip to nearby Murano, famous for its glass-blowing workshops. Murano-Burano-Venice tours often offer combined itineraries, allowing you to experience both islands in one day. Watching master artisans create delicate glass pieces in Murano is a fascinating contrast to the lace-making of Burano, making it a well-rounded cultural experience.
Whether you’re visiting as part of a Burano tour or venturing out on your own, this enchanting island promises an unforgettable day trip from Venice. From its colorful streets to its rich artisanal traditions, Burano is a feast for the eyes and the soul.
