Points and Miles FAQs
What is the difference between points and miles?
In practice, both are loyalty currencies. Some programmes call their currency points, while others use miles or a branded name such as Avios. The way they are earned and redeemed depends on the programme.
Are Avios the same as British Airways points?
Avios are the reward currency used by British Airways Club and several participating airline loyalty programmes. British Airways also uses Tier Points separately to determine membership status.
Are Virgin Points and Flying Club the same thing?
Virgin Points are the spendable reward currency. Virgin Atlantic Flying Club is the airline’s loyalty programme, through which members can earn Virgin Points and Tier Points.
Can I transfer points between airlines?
Sometimes, but not universally. Certain programmes share the same currency or allow transfers through approved partners. Never assume points can be moved before checking the programme’s current rules.
Do airline points expire?
Expiry policies vary. Some points remain active when you earn or spend regularly, while other programmes apply different rules. Check each loyalty programme before leaving a balance unused.
Are reward flights free?
Not usually completely free. Points can cover the base redemption, but taxes, fees and carrier-imposed charges may still be payable.
What is the best way to start collecting travel points?
Begin with a programme connected to an airline or hotel group you already use. Learn what you want to redeem the points for before moving spending or transferring points into that programme.
Should I transfer points as soon as there is a bonus?
Not automatically. Transfers can be irreversible, and reward availability may disappear. Confirm the redemption you want before transferring a large balance.
