By Mr Plane Guy | Travel Blogger, Former Airline Crew & Professional Overpacker
Finding the best men’s carry-on bag sounds simple, until you realise every airline has a different baggage allowance, every brand measures capacity differently, and half the bags described as “cabin approved” are far too big to travel under the seat.
After 15 years working as airline crew and a slightly unhealthy amount of time testing luggage, I’ve learned that the best travel bag is not necessarily the biggest one you can force into an overhead locker.
It should fit the airline you’re flying with, protect everything you carry and make travelling easier, not leave you performing a last-minute airport repacking ceremony beside the gate.
My own choice changes depending on the trip. I might take a smart waterproof backpack for a business trip, a compact 40 x 30 x 20 cm bag for Ryanair or Wizz Air, or a wheeled cabin suitcase when I want to glide through the terminal like the organised travel professional I occasionally pretend to be.
This guide includes backpacks, totes and wheeled options. If you specifically want a hard-shell case, read my complete guide to the best carry-on suitcases, where I compare more traditional cabin luggage in detail.

Quick Answer: The Best Men’s Carry-On Bags
Best smart backpack: Maverick & Co Vista Waterproof Backpack
Best for Ryanair and Wizz Air: Cabin Max Equator X 24L
Best-value under seat backpack: Cabin Max Manhattan Pro 24L
Best for laptops and technology: Maverick & Co Vista Waterproof Backpack
Best tote to pair with a suitcase: ALPAKA Elements Tote
Best premium wheeled option: LEVEL8 20-inch Carry-On
Best lightweight cabin suitcase: Cabin Max Anode 40L
Prices and airline baggage policies can change, so always check the allowance included with your booking before travelling.
1. Maverick & Co Vista Waterproof Backpack
The Maverick & Co Vista is the most polished men’s travel bag in this guide.
Its streamlined, minimalist shape works with business clothes without making you look as though you are about to hike across the Alps. The exterior is made using highly water-resistant vegan leather, giving it a smart appearance while protecting your belongings from rain and the general chaos of commuting.
Inside, there is a shock-absorbing technology sleeve with room for a laptop up to 16 inches. It also has useful internal organisation, padded ventilated back panels and a luggage strap that slides over the handle of a wheeled suitcase.
That luggage strap is important. There is nothing luxurious about chasing a runaway backpack across an airport floor while balancing a coffee, passport and suitcase.
The Vista is available in black, navy, green and ice grey. Black is probably the safest option for business travel, although the green adds a little more personality without becoming difficult to match.
Best for: Business trips, commuting and carrying a laptop without sacrificing style.
Like the Maverick & Co Vista Backpack?
Key features:
Fits laptops up to 16 inches
Highly water-resistant materials
Shock-absorbing technology sleeve
Ventilated back padding
Luggage handle strap
One-year warranty
30-day returns
Plane Honest verdict: This is the bag I would choose when appearance matters almost as much as practicality. You can take it from the airport directly into a meeting without it looking like standard cabin luggage.
At around €189 in the sale when I checked, it is a premium purchase. However, it works as both a travel backpack and an everyday work bag, which makes the cost easier to justify.
The only limitation is capacity. It is better for carrying technology, documents and neatly organised travel essentials than cramming in a week’s worth of clothes.

2. Cabin Max Equator X 24L Underseat Cabin Bag

Best for Ryanair, Wizz Air and Other Strict Cabin Allowances
This is one of the carry-on bags I use most frequently for trips with Ryanair, easyJet and Wizz Air.
The Cabin Max Equator X measures 40 x 30 x 20 cm and is designed around the free underseat allowances used by several European airlines. However, you should always check your own booking because baggage rules and the bags included with different fares can change.
Unlike a conventional backpack, the Equator X has a split interior and packs more like a small suitcase. This makes it easier to separate clothing, technology and travel essentials without everything sinking into one dark hole at the bottom.
It has space for a laptop up to 13 inches and is made using material produced from recycled plastic bottles. Cabin Max also includes a three-year warranty.

Best for: Short low-cost airline trips where avoiding additional cabin-bag charges is the priority.
Key features:
24L capacity
40 x 30 x 20 cm
Split suitcase-style interior
Laptop storage up to 13 inches
Made using recycled plastic bottles
Three-year warranty
Available in several colours
Plane Honest verdict: For approximately £39.95 when checked, the Equator X offers an excellent combination of price, packing space and airline-friendly dimensions.
It is particularly good for two- or three-night trips when you want to travel with one bag and avoid paying for an additional overhead case.
The 40 cm length works well across several stricter airline allowances, although it does not use all the space currently offered by easyJet’s larger 45 x 36 x 20 cm free under seat allowance.

it also comes in a 30L option,

For easyJet, I would choose the Cabin Max Equator X 30L because its dimensions make better use of the airline’s free under seat allowance.
Plane Tip:
I always pop an AirTag in my backpack or checked suitcase. It helps me keep track of my bag’s location and gives me a little extra peace of mind, especially when I hand it over at check-in.
3. Cabin Max Manhattan Pro 24L

Best-Value Organised Underseat Backpack
The Cabin Max Manhattan Pro is another 40 x 30 x 20 cm travel backpack, but it focuses more heavily on organisation.
It has a large clamshell main compartment, an organiser section, front and side quick-access pockets, a bottle holder and a padded sleeve for laptops up to 13 inches.
There is also a rear strap that allows the backpack to sit on the handle of a rolling suitcase. This makes it useful as either your only bag or a personal item alongside larger cabin luggage.
The rectangular design uses the available space more efficiently than a traditional rounded backpack. It opens flat, so you can pack it like a suitcase rather than feeding everything through a narrow opening at the top.
Best for: Travellers who want an affordable underseat bag with plenty of organisation.
Key features:
24L capacity
40 x 30 x 20 cm
Clamshell opening
Laptop storage up to 13 inches
Bottle holder
Quick-access pockets
Luggage handle strap
Three-year warranty
Plane Honest verdict: At around £34.95, this is a lot of cabin bag for the money. It can cost less than adding one extra bag to a single flight, so regular low-cost airline travellers should recover the purchase price fairly quickly.
The only downside is that lots of pockets can reduce the completely open packing space. Travellers with laptops larger than 13 inches will also need another option. This option fits the very strict Ryanair baggage rules for free carry on item!

4. ALPAKA Elements Tote

Best Personal Item to Pair With a Suitcase
I use the ALPAKA Elements Tote as a flexible second bag, particularly when travelling with a hard-shell cabin suitcase.
It sits neatly on top of my wheeled bag and keeps my laptop, chargers, passport and in-flight essentials within easy reach. That means I do not have to open my suitcase in the middle of the terminal because I have packed my headphones underneath six pairs of underwear.
The large Elements Tote offers approximately 20L of capacity and has a structured base, magnetic closure and semi-padded sleeve for laptops up to 16 inches.
It also includes internal bottle sleeves, exterior slip pockets and water-resistant Axoflux ripstop fabric. The bag folds relatively flat, making it easy to pack inside a suitcase when it is not needed.
Best for: Airport essentials, work equipment and use alongside a wheeled cabin case.
Key features:
Up to 20L capacity depending on size
Semi-padded 16-inch laptop sleeve
Internal bottle holders
Exterior slip pockets
Water-resistant fabric
Magnetic closure
Folds flat for packing
Plane Honest verdict: This is not the bag I would choose as my only luggage , but it is an excellent companion to a carry-on suitcase, Although I have used it for 1 and 2 night trips away. It looks cleaner and more grown-up than balancing a stuffed daypack on top of your case. The magnetic closure gives quick access, although it is not as secure as a fully zipped travel bag.
Check the exact size before ordering because the Elements Tote is available in several versions.
What If You Prefer a Carry-On Suitcase?
Backpacks and duffels are excellent for underseat travel, but a wheeled case can be easier when your bag is heavy, the walk through the airport is long or you want better protection for the contents.
I have kept these next two recommendations relatively short because my dedicated best carry-on luggage and suitcase guide contains the full comparisons.
5. LEVEL8 20-Inch Carry-On Suitcase
Best Premium Wheeled Option
The LEVEL8 Luminous Textured Carry-On 20“ is one of the best premium carry-on suitcases I have used, not simply because it looks good, but because it genuinely changes how you move through an airport.
The wheels are smooth but sturdy, making the case easy to control even when it is fully packed. This matters more than people realise. A beautiful suitcase with terrible wheels becomes significantly less beautiful while dragging it through Gatwick at 5 am.
The 20-inch version provides approximately 40L of capacity, making it suitable for trips of around two to seven days.
Its published measurements are:
14.5 x 9.2 x 21.5 inches
Approximately 40L
7.7lb
Best for: Travellers wanting a premium hard-shell case with excellent wheels.
Use code PLANE15 for 15% off
Plane Honest verdict: If you want a reliable, lightweight suitcase with a more premium feel, the LEVEL8 Luminous Textured Carry-On 20“ is an excellent choice.
It works best with airlines and fares that include a full-size overhead cabin bag. It is not intended as a free underseat item for airlines such as Ryanair or easyJet.
Always remember that wheels and handles count when an airline measures your suitcase.

Best Lightweight Cabin Suitcase
The Cabin Max Anode is the more affordable and lightweight alternative to the LEVEL8.
Its 55 x 40 x 20 cm dimensions work with many traditional airline cabin allowances and paid overhead-bag options. It can be suitable for fares such as easyJet’s large cabin bag and Ryanair Priority, as well as airlines with more generous hand-luggage allowances, but always check your particular ticket.
At approximately 40L, it provides enough capacity for a proper short break without becoming difficult to manoeuvre.
Best for: Travellers who want a lightweight, affordable wheeled cabin case.
Key features:
40L capacity
55 x 40 x 20 cm
Lightweight hard shell
Four spinner wheels
Useful across several full-size cabin allowances
Plane Honest verdict: I recommend the Cabin Max Anode frequently because it does the basics very well without charging a premium price.
It is a sensible first cabin suitcase and especially useful when low weight matters more than luxury finishes.
However, it is not included with the standard free underseat allowance on airlines such as easyJet or Ryanair. You will normally need a fare or add-on that includes an overhead cabin bag.

How to Choose the Best Men’s Travel Bag
Start With the Airline, Not the Bag
A travel bag can be excellent and still be wrong for your flight.
Budget airlines frequently separate the free underseat item from a paid overhead cabin bag. Measurements also vary between airlines, and baggage policies can change.
Check the allowance displayed in your booking rather than relying entirely on a retailer’s “airline approved” description.
You can also read my detailed guides covering Ryanair cabin bag sizes, easyJet cabin bags and Wizz Air baggage allowances before travelling.

Choose the Right Carrying Style
Backpack: Best for hands-free travel, public transport, long airport walks and uneven streets.
Duffel: Best for flexible packing and a smarter weekend-bag appearance, although carrying a heavy duffel on one shoulder can become uncomfortable.
Tote: Best as a personal item alongside a suitcase, particularly for laptops, documents and things you want during the flight.
Suitcase: Best for heavier loads, smooth airport floors and protecting fragile contents.

Do Not Buy Using Capacity Alone
Capacity figures are useful, but shape matters.
A rectangular clamshell backpack often uses its dimensions more effectively than a rounded daypack. Thick padding, handles and wheels can also reduce the internal packing space.
The external dimensions, not the claimed litre capacity, determine whether the bag fits inside an airline’s luggage sizer.

Check the Laptop Compartment
Several compact underseat bags only accommodate a 13-inch laptop.
If you travel with a 16-inch MacBook or work laptop, the Maverick & Co Vista, or larger ALPAKA Elements Tote will be better starting points.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best men’s carry-on bag?
For most short low-cost European trips, the Cabin Max Equator X 24L offers the strongest balance of price, airline-friendly dimensions and useful packing space. For business travel, the Maverick & Co Vista is the smarter choice.
Is a backpack or duffel better for carry-on travel?
A backpack is generally more comfortable for long airport walks and public transport. A duffel can look smarter and offer a more open packing space, but carrying 8–10kg on one shoulder quickly becomes uncomfortable.
Can a men’s travel bag count as a personal item?
Yes, provided its external dimensions fit the airline’s personal-item allowance and it can be placed underneath the seat. The name of the bag does not matter, the airline will care about its measurements, weight and the allowance included with your fare.
Are these bags suitable for US airlines?
Several of them may work well with US airlines, but cabin-bag and personal-item policies vary by carrier, fare and sometimes aircraft. Compare the external measurements of the bag with your airline’s latest published allowance before buying.
What is the best carry-on suitcase?
The LEVEL8 is my premium choice because of its smooth wheels and excellent airport handling. The Cabin Max Anode is the better-value lightweight option. You can compare more wheeled cases in my complete best carry-on suitcase guide.
What I Pack Inside My Carry-On
Memory Foam Travel Pillow
I've recently been using a memory foam travel neck pillow with 360° support, which helps keep your head upright instead of constantly falling forward while you try to sleep. The ergonomic design moulds to your neck using premium memory foam, while the breathable, hypoallergenic cover keeps it comfortable even on overnight flights.

3D Bluetooth Sleep Mask
If you're a light sleeper like me, this is another brilliant travel upgrade. The 3D Bluetooth Sleep Mask blocks out cabin light completely while letting you listen to music, white noise or your favourite podcast without uncomfortable earbuds.
It's especially good if you sleep on your side, making it ideal for overnight flights and long journeys.
✔️ Designed for side sleepers
✔️ Complete blackout for better sleep
✔️ Built-in Bluetooth speakers
✔️ No uncomfortable earbuds
✔️ Perfect for flights, hotels and train journeys

Plane Honest Final Verdict
There is no single men’s carry-on bag that wins every category.
The best choice depends on whether you need to fit underneath a budget-airline seat, protect a large laptop, arrive looking business-ready or roll the weight instead of carrying it.
My overall underseat choice is the Cabin Max Equator X 24L, while the Maverick & Co Vista is the standout smart backpack.
The ALPAKA Elements Tote is the best companion to a wheeled case, and the LEVEL8 remains my premium suitcase choice.
