Virgin Atlantic’s baggage allowance is more generous than many low-cost airlines, but the amount you can check in depends heavily on your fare. Economy Light includes hand luggage but no checked bag, while Premium and Upper Class include two checked bags as standard.
I spent 15 years working as Virgin Atlantic cabin crew, including 10 years in charge, so I know how much confusion can appear at the airport when a passenger has read the allowance for the wrong fare, route or operating airline. This guide gives you the practical 2026 rules in plain English, including cabin-bag dimensions, checked-bag weights and the charges that can make an overweight suitcase painfully expensive.

Quick Answer Express: Virgin Atlantic Baggage Rules
Economy and Premium passengers can bring one cabin bag measuring up to 56 × 36 × 23cm and weighing up to 10kg, plus one under-seat bag measuring up to 40 × 30 × 15cm.
Economy Light: no checked bag
Economy Classic and Delight: 1 × 23kg checked bag
Premium: 2 × 23kg checked bags
Upper Class: 2 × 32kg checked bags
Fare | Cabin bag | Under-seat bag | Checked baggage |
Economy Light | 1 × 10kg | 1 × 40 × 30 × 15cm | None |
Economy Classic | 1 × 10kg | 1 × 40 × 30 × 15cm | 1 × 23kg |
Economy Delight | 1 × 10kg | 1 × 40 × 30 × 15cm | 1 × 23kg |
Premium | 1 × 10kg | 1 × 40 × 30 × 15cm | 2 × 23kg |
Upper Class | 2 bags, 16kg combined | Small personal items permitted | 2 × 32kg |
Allowances can differ on selected routes and partner-operated flights. The baggage allowance shown in My Booking and on your ticket is the one to follow.

Virgin Atlantic hand luggage allowance
The standard Virgin Atlantic hand-luggage size is 56 x 36 x 23cm (22 x 14 x 9in). Measure the complete bag, including wheels, handles and any bulging external pockets.
Cabin | Number of bags | Maximum weight | Maximum size |
Economy Light, Classic & Delight | 1 | 10kg | 56 x 36 x 23cm |
Premium | 1 | 10kg | 56 x 36 x 23cm |
Upper Class | 2 | 16kg combined | 56 x 36 x 23cm each |
Upper Class passengers can take two pieces of hand luggage with a combined weight of 16kg. One bag may weigh up to 12kg, meaning the other could weigh up to 4kg. Each piece must remain within Virgin Atlantic’s permitted dimensions.
Planning a Virgin Atlantic trip?
Compare current Virgin Atlantic fares and check whether Economy Classic costs less than adding baggage to an Economy Light ticket.
Plane Tip: Virgin Atlantic is a weight-conscious airline. A cabin case that fits the dimensions can still be checked if it is too heavy, so weigh it before leaving home.
Here is one I recommend on Amazon.
Can I bring a handbag or laptop bag as well?
Yes. Virgin Atlantic permits one under-seat bag, such as a handbag or small rucksack, measuring up to 40 × 30 × 15cm in addition to the main cabin bag. It must fit completely beneath the seat in front.
A laptop can be packed inside either permitted bag. A larger laptop backpack exceeding 40 × 30 × 15cm may not qualify as the additional under-seat item.
Virgin Atlantic checked baggage allowance
Every standard checked bag can measure up to 90 x 75 x 43cm. Economy and Premium bags normally have a maximum weight of 23kg each. Upper Class bags can weigh up to 32kg each.
Ticket type | Included bags | Maximum per bag | Maximum dimensions |
Economy Light | 0 | — | — |
Economy Classic | 1 | 23kg | 90 x 75 x 43cm |
Economy Delight | 1 | 23kg | 90 x 75 x 43cm |
Premium | 2 | 23kg | 90 x 75 x 43cm |
Upper Class | 2 | 32kg | 90 x 75 x 43cm |

Economy Light baggage allowance
Economy Light includes one 10kg cabin bag but no checked baggage. The onboard experience still looks much like standard Virgin Atlantic Economy: meals, drinks and entertainment are included, but the checked bag is not.
If you know you need a checked bag, compare the total price of Economy Light plus baggage with Economy Classic. The cheapest headline fare is not always the cheapest fare after extras.
Economy Classic and Economy Delight baggage allowance
Economy Classic and Economy Delight normally include one 23kg checked bag, one 10kg cabin bag and one under-seat bag. Delight adds extra legroom and selected airport benefits, but it does not normally increase the checked-baggage allowance over Classic.
Virgin Atlantic Premium baggage allowance
Premium includes two checked bags weighing up to 23kg each, as well as one 10kg cabin bag. That is a total checked allowance of 46kg, but it must be divided between two bags: you cannot combine the allowance into one 30kg suitcase without paying an overweight charge.
Plane Honest: If baggage matters to you, Premium’s two included 23kg bags can substantially reduce the real price difference between Premium and Economy.

Plane Tip: Before booking Economy Light, compare it with Economy Classic. Once you add the current £65 checked-bag fee, Classic may provide better overall value.
Best Cabin Case for Virgin Atlantic: My Tested Recommendation
This is the cabin bag I use for Virgin Atlantic cabin bag allowance
After years in aviation, I’ve tested a lot and one that genuinely stands out is the LEVEL8 Luminous Carry-On. 18'' Carry on Overall: 13.7” L*9.2" W*20.2” H | 7.1 lbs | 39 L
It's also Ideal for short-haul and frequent travel, as it fits easyJet paid onboard option and many other airlines cabin baggage policies.
But the real difference? After years of dragging cases through terminals, I’ve had shoulder strain and stiff necks from poor luggage. This is one of the few cases where you push it, not pull it, the wheels take the load, not your body.
If you’re looking for a reliable cabin bag that actually makes travel easier, this is one of the best I’ve used. This is the Level8 18" Luminous Textured carry on.
*Its height and width fall within Virgin Atlantic’s allowance, but its published depth is technically 0.5cm greater than Virgin’s 23cm limit. I have travelled successfully with mine, but it is not an exact guaranteed fit. Plane Tip: go for it, maximise your allowance!

Plane Tip: I put an AirTag inside my suitcase. On a recent journey, I could see that my bag had reached the aircraft, which gave me real peace of mind.
I also photograph my luggage before checking it in. Cases are surprisingly often damaged, and a time-stamped photo showing the condition of your suitcase can provide useful evidence if you need to make a claim.
Sleep Better on Your Virgin Atlantic Flight
I've recently been using a memory foam travel neck pillow with 360° support, which helps keep your head upright instead of constantly falling forward while you try to sleep. The ergonomic design moulds to your neck using premium memory foam, while the breathable, hypoallergenic cover keeps it comfortable even on overnight flights.

3D Bluetooth Sleep Mask
If you're a light sleeper like me, this is another brilliant travel upgrade. The 3D Bluetooth Sleep Mask blocks out cabin light completely while letting you listen to music, white noise or your favourite podcast without uncomfortable earbuds.
It's ideal for overnight flights and long journeys.
✔️ Designed for side sleepers
✔️ Complete blackout for better sleep
✔️ Built-in Bluetooth speakers
✔️ No uncomfortable earbuds
✔️ Perfect for flights, hotels and train journeys

Virgin Atlantic Upper Class baggage allowance
Upper Class includes two checked bags weighing up to 32kg each, plus two pieces of hand baggage weighing up to 16kg combined. One of the two cabin bags may weigh up to 12kg, provided their combined weight does not exceed 16kg. This is the most generous standard allowance, but no individual checked bag can exceed 32kg.

Flying Virgin Atlantic from Heathrow Terminal 3
Virgin Atlantic operates from Heathrow Terminal 3. Build enough time into the journey for check-in and bag drop, particularly if you need to pay for baggage, move weight between cases or check unusual equipment. Virgin Atlantic recommends arriving at least three hours before departure when checking baggage. Desk opening and closing times vary by airport, so check the airport-specific information before travelling.

Heathrow Express
is still the fastest option overall and if you book tickets around: 30 days in advance
…you can often save a surprising amount compared to last-minute fares.
Yes who can remember to book at least 30 days in advance? But if you don't the ticket price jumps to £26 per person each way! Oh you will set a reminder now?
Heathrow Airport Parking
If you're driving to Heathrow, I recommend booking official Heathrow Airport parking in advance, which offers flexible cancellation up to two hours before travel. Cancellation conditions vary by product, so check the terms displayed before booking.
Heathrow parking prices can become VERY expensive closer to departure.
Virgin Atlantic Routes with a different baggage allowance
Virgin Atlantic provides an enhanced baggage allowance on selected routes involving India and Nigeria. Economy Classic and Delight passengers travelling on qualifying journeys may receive two checked bags weighing up to 23kg each.
Allowances depend on the precise itinerary, ticket and operating carrier. Check the allowance displayed in My Booking for every flight, especially when connecting to a service operated by Delta, Air France, KLM or another partner.
FLYING TO NEW YORK? Once the bags are sorted, continue planning with my New York guides: where to stay, how to get from JFK to Manhattan and my top 10 things to do.
Travelling with serious baggage and possibly some emotional baggage too? Upper Class includes two 32kg checked bags, two pieces of hand luggage and the full Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse experience at Heathrow.

Charges apply per flight rather than per return journey. Different historical prices can apply to older bookings, and local-currency amounts depend on where the journey originates.
How to add baggage to a Virgin Atlantic booking
You can add bags during online check-in, which opens 24 hours before departure and closes 70 minutes before the flight. Virgin Atlantic permits up to seven extra bags per person during online check-in. At the airport, you can pay for up to ten bags per person, subject to available space.
If your journey contains a partner-operated flight, you may need to purchase additional baggage at the airport and the operating airline may apply its own limitations.
What happens if my bag is overweight?
For cabins where the standard limit is 23kg, a bag weighing more than 23kg but no more than 32kg normally attracts the £65 overweight charge. Bags above 32kg are not accepted as normal passenger baggage and must be repacked or carried through an alternative service.
Do not assume two included 23kg bags equal one 46kg bag. If your fare includes a second bag, moving items between cases could prevent an overweight charge.
What counts as oversized baggage?
Virgin Atlantic classifies a checked item larger than 90 x 75 x 43cm as oversized. Its published oversized charge is £200. Sporting equipment has its own acceptance rules, so check the exact equipment page rather than assuming that any long item will travel automatically. An item over Virgin Atlantic’s maximum acceptance dimensions of 190 × 75 × 65cm cannot travel as ordinary checked baggage and may need to be transported as cargo.
Flying Club Silver and Gold baggage benefits
Flying Club Silver and Gold members can check one additional bag weighing up to 23kg free of charge on Virgin Atlantic-operated flights. The benefit belongs to the status member and does not automatically extend to other passengers on the booking.
Gold members can also take up to 16kg of hand luggage. Benefits on partner-operated flights vary, so check the operating airline’s rules.
Virgin Atlantic infant and child baggage allowance
Children and infants travelling in their own seat receive the same baggage allowance as an adult on the same fare.
A lap infant receives one checked bag, except on Economy Light, where no checked bag is included.
Babies and toddlers aged 0–23 months receive one hand-baggage item weighing up to 6kg.
A fully collapsible pushchair and a car seat can be carried in addition to the free checked allowance. A folded pushchair no larger than 23 x 36 x 56cm may travel in the cabin, but it counts as the passenger’s hand baggage rather than an extra item.
Virgin Atlantic currently publishes a £50 charge for one infant checked bag on Economy Light for bookings made on or after 28 July 2021.
Sports equipment, golf clubs and musical instruments
Sports equipment can normally travel as part of your checked-baggage allowance. If it replaces one of your included bags and stays within the relevant limits, there may be no additional bag fee. If it is extra, overweight or oversized, the corresponding charge can apply.
Golf clubs may travel within the checked-baggage allowance, but they are not necessarily an additional free item.
Musical instruments that fit within 56 x 36 x 23cm and the applicable cabin weight may travel as hand baggage; larger instruments may need a booked seat or checked-baggage arrangements.
Liquids, batteries and AirTags
Liquid rules are set by your departure airport as well as the airline. Many airports still require containers of no more than 100ml, while screening procedures at some UK airports have changed. Check the airport you are actually departing from rather than relying on a general social-media claim.
Power banks and spare lithium batteries belong in hand baggage, not checked luggage. An Apple AirTag can be placed inside a suitcase for location information, but it does not replace Virgin Atlantic’s official delayed-baggage reporting process.
The bags I recommend for Virgin Atlantic
Luxury Luggage for Less
Your suitcase says a lot about your travel style.
My personal rotation:
Rimowa Cabin Plus sleek, durable, designer
Briggs & Riley Baseline expandable genius for long hauls
But here’s my affordable dupe:
👉 This Amazon Premium Cabin Case, looks high-end, fits Virgin Atlantic cabin dimensions, and costs a fraction of designer brands, without sacrificing space.
Flight Knight silver cabin case, the stylish “Rimowa look” for less
If you like the ribbed aluminium-style Rimowa look but not the four-figure price, this silver Flight Knight case is the stylish budget alternative. Its published external dimensions are 55 x 35 x 20cm, so it sits within Virgin Atlantic’s cabin-bag limit.
LEVEL8 Luminous, my premium hard-shell recommendation
I have personally used the LEVEL8 Luminous and rate it for its smooth wheels, premium finish and polycarbonate shell. For Virgin Atlantic, I would recommend the 18" Luminous at 51.5 x 35 x 23.5cm. This is a great quality suitcase that will last for years, I even use mine on easyJet flights as the paid cabin option.

Cabin Max Manhattan Pro 30L Trolley Case
If you want a Cabin Max case that sits comfortably within Virgin Atlantic’s cabin-bag allowance, the Manhattan Pro 30L Trolley is a much better match.
Its published dimensions are 45 × 36 × 20cm, placing it within Virgin Atlantic’s maximum cabin-bag size of 56 × 36 × 23cm. The compact trolley design gives you useful packing space while leaving a little margin within the airline’s height and depth limits.
Why I recommend it for Virgin Atlantic:
Published dimensions fit Virgin Atlantic’s cabin-bag allowance
30-litre capacity
Compact trolley format
Suitable for short trips and frequent travel
Smaller than the maximum allowance, reducing concerns about the baggage sizer
Plane Honest: This case does not use every centimetre of Virgin Atlantic’s relatively generous cabin allowance, but that makes it a safer option if you want a compact case without worrying about it being slightly too large.

Prefer a different style or want to make greater use of Virgin Atlantic’s allowance? Cabin Max also has a dedicated collection of bags designed to fit Virgin Atlantic’s allowance.
Plane Honest: For the price, I have found Cabin Max luggage to offer excellent quality.
Plane Tip: Flying Virgin Atlantic overnight? I have started wearing the Comfrt Airplane Mode Hoodie on long-haul flights. Its built-in eye mask and soft fabric make it useful when the cabin lights are still on and I am ready to sleep.
Plane Tip: Get a Priority Pass membership. With my 30% discount, you’ll pay around £24 for lounge entry. That’s unlimited food, drinks, Wi-Fi, and a comfortable place to wait before boarding. This is what premium should feel like and it costs a fraction of the upgrade price.
Priority Pass gives you access to over 1,900+ airport lounges around the world and I’ve secured a 30% discount just for my readers.

Final Boarding Call
The biggest Virgin Atlantic baggage trap is Economy Light: it includes a 10kg cabin bag, but no checked luggage. Classic and Delight normally include one 23kg checked bag, Premium includes two 23kg bags, and Upper Class includes two 32kg bags.
Measure the complete cabin bag, keep each checked suitcase within its own weight limit and check My Booking for route or partner-airline exceptions. Spending two minutes checking the allowance before you leave home is much more pleasant than repacking your underwear across the check-in hall.
Plane Tip: Take a screenshot of the baggage allowance shown in My Booking before travelling. If your itinerary contains a codeshare or connection, check every operating carrier as well.
