Emirates’ New Premium Economy Seat Is Giving Business Class, But Is It a Game Changer?
Emirates has unveiled what it calls the world’s first fully electrically powered Premium Economy seat complete with a full-height adjustable privacy divider between every seat.
And I’m just going to say it: this could be a Premium Economy game changer.
I recently flew Emirates Premium Economy on its then-brand-new Airbus A350 and, despite the beautiful cabin and comfortable seat, I actually hated the overall experience. The cabin was polished, but the service felt robotic, the food choices ran out and I spent most of the flight surrounded by crying babies without so much as a complimentary pair of earplugs.
So I wasn’t expecting to be this excited about another Emirates Premium Economy announcement.
But an electrically controlled seat, a proper privacy screen, a 4K entertainment system, wireless charging and a cradle-style recline that does not invade the space behind? This is giving Business Class, without the Business Class price tag.
Quick Answer: What Is New About the Emirates Premium Economy Seat?
The new Emirates Premium Economy seat is due to debut on newly delivered Airbus A350 aircraft. Its headline feature is a full-height privacy divider between every seat, which passengers can raise, lower and lock into position electronically.
The seat itself is also fully electric, with one-touch lounge and meal positions. It is 20 inches wide, offers up to 39 inches of pitch and reclines into a cradle position without intruding into the row behind.
Other upgrades include:
A redesigned Safran U-Dream leather headrest
A manually operated leather footrest
Wireless phone charging
USB-C charging at every seat
A tray table with an integrated phone holder
A 13.3-inch 4K HDR entertainment screen
New left- and right-facing exterior aircraft cameras
It will be installed in a small cabin of just 28 seats, arranged in a spacious 2-3-2 configuration.
The Privacy Screen Could Change Premium Economy
Privacy has always been one of the biggest differences between Premium Economy and Business Class.
Premium Economy might give you a wider seat, more legroom and better food, but you are normally still sitting shoulder-to-shoulder with a stranger. There is nowhere to hide when they start watching your film, peering at your dinner or climbing across you for the toilet.
Emirates’ new divider extends to the full height of the seat. You can raise or lower it using the seat controls and lock it into position for working, eating or sleeping.
No, it does not turn the seat into a private suite and there is no closing door. However, it could create a genuinely useful sense of separation – particularly in the centre block of three seats.
That is why I think other airlines will be watching very closely. Airlines including Emirates have spent years improving Premium Economy through larger screens, better meals and extra legroom. Proper personal privacy feels like the next major battleground.
Fully Electric Controls: Business Class Energy?
This is Emirates’ first fully electrically powered Premium Economy seat. Instead of manually fighting with a recline button while trying to push your body backwards, you can select your position through an integrated passenger control unit.
Dedicated lounge mode and meal mode settings should make it easier to find a comfortable position without constantly adjusting every element.
The cradle-style recline is important too. The seat moves within its own shell, so reclining should not suddenly bring the seatback in front into your personal space or crush your laptop during dinner.
It still does not become a flat bed, so let’s not get carried away. But it is another feature that narrows the gap between Premium Economy and the angled Business Class seats many airlines were selling not that long ago.

A Better Headrest, Footrest and Device Setup
Emirates is also bringing Safran Seats’ U-Dream headrest into the cabin. The leather headrest has adjustable wings designed to support the head and neck in several positions.
That may sound like a small detail, but a good headrest can make far more difference to sleep than an extra inch of legroom, especially when it stops your head repeatedly falling onto the stranger beside you. Not exactly the meet-cute anyone ordered.
There is also a manually deployable leather footrest to reduce leg fatigue.
Every seat gets USB-C power and wireless charging, while the tray table includes a phone holder. That lets you use your phone as a second screen while eating or watching something on the main display.
The Entertainment Screen Gets a Serious Upgrade
The new 13.3-inch touchscreen supports 4K HDR, with Emirates promising sharper picture quality and more responsive navigation through its ice entertainment system.
Newly delivered A350s will also add left- and right-facing exterior camera views to the existing forward and downward cameras. Aviation geeks can therefore spend an entire flight watching the wing, runway and scenery outside, which, frankly, is sometimes better than the film selection.
The new seat builds on an Emirates Premium Economy service that already includes many Business Class-style details.
Premium Economy Dining Gets the Business Class Treatment
Meals are served on Royal Doulton china with linen napkins and Robert Welch cutlery. Menus are regionally inspired, and drinks include premium wines and Chandon Vintage Brut 2021, reserved for Emirates Premium Economy passengers worldwide.
From September, selected routes are also due to serve wines including Chablis Premier Cru Jean-Marc Brocard 2024 and La Parde de Haut-Bailly 2014. From October, Wiston Estate Brut NV is set to become Emirates’ first English sparkling wine, served exclusively in Premium Economy on UK routes.
It all sounds rather fabulous. I just hope passengers actually get their preferred meal choice, as one of my frustrations on my Emirates A350 flight was that several options had already run out.
Emirates Amenity Kits,
And My One Very Specific Request
On long-haul flights, Emirates Premium Economy passengers receive reusable United for Wildlife amenity kits made using bio-based materials, including alternatives to leather made from cactus.
The kits include Aveda skincare products, socks, an eyeshade, earplugs and a dental kit.
And yes, I noticed that one very important word: earplugs.
On my Emirates A350 flight from Dubai to Edinburgh, the tiny Premium Economy cabin was positioned between bassinet areas in Business Class and Economy. I listened to crying for most of the eight-hour journey and Emirates did not provide earplugs on that flight.
So Emirates, the electric privacy screen is marvellous, but please make sure those earplugs are actually loaded. A divider can block an awkward glance; it cannot block sound.
Is Emirates Cannibalising Its Own Business Class?
Possibly, but that may be the point.
There is still a substantial difference. Emirates Business Class offers a lie-flat bed, direct aisle access on the A350, lounge access, priority services and a more personalised experience. The new Premium Economy seat does not suddenly replace any of that.
However, plenty of leisure travellers do not need a flat bed badly enough to justify paying thousands more. Give them a wide seat, 39-inch pitch, electrically controlled recline, strong privacy, excellent food and a tiny 28-seat cabin, and Business Class becomes much harder to justify.
For a daytime flight, I would seriously question whether many travellers need anything more.
It also places pressure on airlines still selling Premium Economy as little more than a slightly wider Economy seat with a glass of fizz. Emirates is clearly a market leader here, and I expect competitors to experiment with taller privacy wings, sliding dividers and more electrically controlled seats over the next few years.
My Plane Honest Verdict: Is It Really a Game Changer?
On paper, yes.
I currently rank Emirates only seventh in my guide to the best Premium Economy airlines. The cabin I flew looked beautiful and the seat was comfortable, but the overall experience did not match the hype or the price.
This new design directly improves the hard product. The full-height divider is not just a decorative wing around the headrest; it gives passengers meaningful control over their space. Combine that with electric adjustment, non-intrusive recline, wireless charging and a 4K screen, and Emirates may have created the closest thing yet to a Business Class-style Premium Economy seat.
But a brilliant seat cannot fix inconsistent service, poor meal availability or a badly managed cabin environment. Emirates must deliver the soft product with the same attention it has given the hardware.
Would I fly Emirates Premium Economy again to test this seat? After saying a firm “no” at the end of my last review, I cannot believe I am writing this, but yes, absolutely.
Just save me a pair of earplugs.

As of 4 September 2026, Emirates has announced or introduced A350 service between Dubai and the destinations below. Aircraft assignments can change, and an A350 on your route does not guarantee this exact new electric Premium Economy seat. The seat is being introduced on newly delivered aircraft, so check the seat map and aircraft details before booking.

For UK travellers, the A350 currently operates Emirates’ fourth daily London Gatwick service, EK069/070. Edinburgh is also served by the A350. Always check your selected date because operational aircraft swaps can happen.

Plane Tip: Premium Economy pricing can vary wildly. Compare nearby dates and airports, then check the difference between Economy, Premium Economy and Business Class.
