Flight Delay Compensation UK: Claim Up to £520 in 2026

After working behind the scenes at a major London airport managing flight disruption, I know how quickly one delayed aircraft can turn into a terminal full of missed connections, disappearing gate information and increasingly angry passengers.
But a delayed or cancelled flight does not always mean you simply have to accept the inconvenience.
Under UK passenger-rights law, you could be entitled to:
Food and refreshments while you wait
Hotel accommodation when an overnight stay becomes necessary
Transport between the airport and your hotel
A refund or alternative flight following a cancellation
Up to £520 per passenger in compensation
The rules depend on your route, the length of the disruption and what caused it.
Flight delayed or cancelled?
AirHelp operates on a no-win, no-fee basis but deducts a fee from successful claims. You can also claim directly from the airline for free.

The Quick Answer
You may qualify for UK flight-delay compensation when:
UK261 applies to your journey
You reach your final destination at least three hours late
The disruption was within the airline’s control
You submit a valid claim to the operating airline
Compensation normally ranges from £220 to £520 per passenger. It is based on flight distance and arrival delay, not the amount you paid for your ticket.
Bad weather, air-traffic-control restrictions and security incidents will not usually generate compensation. However, your airline may still have a duty to provide food, accommodation and alternative transport.
How Much Flight Delay Compensation Can You Claim?
Flight distance | Delay on arrival | Potential compensation |
Under 1,500km | Three hours or more | £220 |
Between 1,500km and 3,500km | Three hours or more | £350 |
Over 3,500km | Between three and four hours | £260 |
Over 3,500km | More than four hours | £520 |
These amounts are per passenger, including children travelling on paid tickets.
The delay is measured when you arrive at your destination, not when the aircraft leaves the departure gate. A flight could depart three hours late but make up time in the air and arrive less than three hours late.

Does UK261 Cover Your Flight?
UK261 normally applies when:
Your flight departs from a UK airport, regardless of the airline
You fly into the UK on a UK airline
You fly into the UK on an EU airline, subject to the applicable UK and EU rules
Different rules may apply to flights beginning elsewhere, particularly journeys involving non-UK and non-EU airlines.
If your itinerary contains connecting flights on one booking, eligibility may be assessed using your arrival time at the final ticketed destination.
Separate self-transfer bookings are treated differently. If the first flight causes you to miss an independently booked second flight, the first airline is not normally responsible for transporting you to the final destination.
What Counts as the Airline’s Fault?
Compensation may be payable when the disruption was caused by something within the airline’s control, including:
Airline staffing or crew shortages
Many routine technical problems
Operational planning failures
Late-arriving aircraft caused by an earlier controllable problem
Overbooking
Some strikes involving the airline’s own staff
You will not normally receive fixed compensation for extraordinary circumstances outside the airline’s control, such as:
Severe weather
Air-traffic-control restrictions
Airport or border-security incidents
Political instability
Volcanic ash
Closure of an airport or runway for safety reasons
Strikes involving third parties rather than the airline
Airlines sometimes describe disruption as “extraordinary circumstances” without providing much detail. Ask for the precise cause and keep a written record.
Your Right to Food, Hotels and Transport
Compensation and care are two separate rights.
Even when a storm or air-traffic-control restriction means you cannot claim fixed compensation, the airline may still be required to look after you.
The right to care generally begins after:
Two hours for flights under 1,500km
Three hours for flights between 1,500km and 3,500km
Four hours for flights over 3,500km
Depending on the delay, the airline should provide:
Reasonable food and refreshments
Two telephone calls or emails
Hotel accommodation when an overnight stay becomes necessary
Transport between the airport and the accommodation
Ask airline staff for vouchers or booking instructions before making your own arrangements.
If the airline cannot provide help, purchase reasonable alternatives and retain itemised receipts. A sensible airport meal and an ordinary hotel are more likely to be reimbursed than champagne, a luxury suite or an expensive taxi over a long distance.
What Happens When Your Flight Is Cancelled?
If UK law covers your cancelled flight, the airline must normally offer you a choice between:
A refund for the unused portion of your booking; or
An alternative journey to your destination.
If you still want to travel, do not automatically accept a refund. Taking the refund could end the airline’s responsibility to reroute you.
The Civil Aviation Authority states that passengers may be entitled to an alternative airline or another suitable form of transport when it can get them to their destination significantly sooner. Discuss this with the airline before buying a replacement ticket yourself.
You may also qualify for compensation if the airline notified you fewer than 14 days before departure. Eligibility depends on the reason for cancellation and the departure and arrival times of the replacement flight.

Can You Claim for a Two-Hour Delay?
You will not normally receive fixed UK261 compensation for arriving only two hours late.
However, a two-hour departure delay on a short flight may activate your right to food and refreshments. Cancellation compensation can also have different timing thresholds depending on when you were notified and the replacement journey offered.
Can You Get a Refund After a Long Delay?
If the departure delay reaches at least five hours and you decide not to travel, you can normally request a refund for the unused flights on your booking.
Do not choose this option if you still intend to take the delayed flight.

My 10-Point Flight Disruption Action Plan
1. Confirm the Flight’s Status
Check the airline’s app and official website. Airport screens and flight-tracking services are useful, but the operating airline is responsible for your booking.
2. Take Screenshots
Record the original itinerary, revised departure time, cancellation message and any explanation given by the airline.
3. Ask for the Cause
Ask airline staff what caused the disruption. Write down the answer, including the time and where you received it.
4. Keep Every Receipt
Retain itemised receipts for reasonable meals, accommodation and transport. A banking-app transaction alone may not show what you purchased.
5. Do Not Rush to Cancel
If the airline cancels your flight, understand the difference between accepting a refund and requesting rerouting before pressing anything in the app.
6. Search for Realistic Alternatives
Look for the same destination from nearby airports and check other airlines. Present a reasonable alternative to the airline and ask it to arrange the booking.
7. Protect Essential Medication
Keep medication, chargers, power banks, travel documents and essential children’s items in your cabin bag.
8. Stay Calm With Airport Staff
Frontline staff did not personally cancel the flight. A clear, polite request is much more likely to receive a useful response.
9. Record Your Actual Arrival Time
Compensation is based on when you reach the destination. Take a screenshot when the aircraft arrives and record when the doors open.
10. Submit the Claim Promptly
Compensation is not paid automatically. Gather your booking confirmation, boarding pass, flight number, receipts and disruption evidence.

How to Claim Flight Delay Compensation
The Civil Aviation Authority recommends contacting the operating airline directly first. Claiming from the airline is free.
Look for the airline’s official expenses or UK261 compensation form. Compensation and expenses may require separate submissions.
Include:
Passenger names
Booking reference
Flight number and travel date
Departure and destination airports
Scheduled and actual arrival times
The reason given for the disruption
Copies of relevant receipts
Your requested compensation or reimbursement
If the airline rejects the claim, ask for its final written response.
You may then be able to escalate the complaint to an approved Alternative Dispute Resolution provider. If the airline is not part of an ADR scheme, the CAA’s Passenger Advice and Complaints Team may be able to assist.

Should You Use AirHelp?
You can claim directly from your airline without paying a fee. That is the option I would try first if the circumstances are straightforward and you are comfortable handling the correspondence.
AirHelp may suit passengers who:
Do not have time to manage the claim
Have already received a rejection
Are unsure which passenger-rights rules apply
Prefer someone else to handle the paperwork and negotiations
AirHelp works on a no-win, no-fee basis. Its current standard fee is equivalent to 35% of recovered compensation, including VAT. That means you receive up to 65% of the compensation awarded under its standard service.
Checking eligibility does not guarantee that a claim will succeed. Review AirHelp’s current fees and terms before submitting your claim.
Airline-Specific Delay and Cancellation Guides
The basic UK261 rules are consistent, but the claims process differs between airlines:

What Is AirHelp+?
AirHelp+ is an annual flight-protection membership that must be purchased before disruption occurs.
At the time of writing, its UK plans include:
Protect Three Trips – £34.99 a Year
Protection for three trips
€100 payout for qualifying flight disruption
€200 for a qualifying missed connection
€100 for lost or delayed luggage
Lounge access during qualifying disruption
Airport Fast Track
Flight-status updates
No AirHelp fee deducted from eligible compensation claims
Protect Nine Trips – £84.99 a Year
This contains similar benefits but protects up to nine trips during the membership period.
Flights normally need to be registered at least 48 hours before departure. AirHelp states that its €100 disruption payout can apply to delays of at least three hours on arrival, cancellations fewer than 28 days before departure and diversions. Conditions and limits apply.

Flight Delay Compensation FAQ
How long must a flight be delayed before I can claim?
For a standard UK261 delay claim, you must normally reach your final destination at least three hours late. The cause must also be within the airline’s control.
Can I claim compensation when bad weather delays my flight?
Fixed compensation is not normally payable when extraordinary weather caused the disruption. Your right to reasonable care may still apply.
Can I claim both expenses and compensation?
Potentially, yes. Reimbursement for reasonable food, hotel and transport costs is separate from fixed compensation. Airlines may require two different claim forms.
Does every passenger receive compensation?
Compensation is calculated per eligible passenger, rather than per booking. Eligibility still depends on the ticket, route, delay and cause.
Can I claim when a connecting flight is missed?
Potentially, if the flights were issued as part of one booking and the disruption causes you to reach the final ticketed destination sufficiently late. Separate self-transfer bookings have considerably less protection.
How far back can I claim?
The time limit can depend on which country’s law applies. Do not assume every journey has the same deadline; submit your claim as soon as reasonably possible.

Final Boarding Call
A disrupted flight is frustrating, but the airline’s first answer is not necessarily the final word.
Record what happened, keep your receipts and understand the difference between:
The right to care
Reimbursement of reasonable expenses
A refund or alternative flight
Fixed UK261 compensation
Start by claiming directly from the airline for free. If the process becomes complicated or the airline rejects a claim you believe is valid, a specialist service may be worth considering.
AirHelp charges a fee from successful standard claims. Eligibility and compensation are not guaranteed.
