Flying easyJet soon? Avoid Packing These 3 Items in Your Hand Luggage
By Mr Plane Guy, Travel Blogger & Flight Expert
Travelling light with easyJet can be a breeze, if you know the rules. But with strict cabin bag policies and vigilant gate checks, it's essential to pack smart to avoid unexpected fees. In this comprehensive guide, we'll walk you through easyJet's hand luggage allowances, share top packing tips, and recommend the best bags to keep you flying high without the hassle.
Understanding easyJet's Cabin Bag Policy
EasyJet offers a straightforward cabin bag policy, but it's crucial to adhere to the specified dimensions to avoid additional charges.
Free Small Cabin Bag (Included with All Tickets)
Size: 45 x 36 x 20 cm (including handles and wheels)
Weight: No official weight limit, but it must fit under the seat in front of you
Examples: Small backpack, laptop bag, or handbag
Cost: Free with any ticket
This is the only luggage included in your basic fare. You're allowed one item only, so no separate handbag unless you’ve paid for an upgrade like Speedy Boarding or an Up Front seat.
Paid Large Cabin Bag (Overhead Locker Access)
Size: 56 x 45 x 25 cm
Weight: No official weight limit, but you must lift it unaided into the overhead bin
Cost: Usually £5.99–£29.99 depending on route and time of booking
This option must be booked in advance and includes Speedy Boarding. Note that there's a limit to the number of large cabin bags allowed per flight, so it's best to book early.
How Strict Is easyJet on Cabin Bag Size?
Very strict. Recent reports indicate that EasyJet is enforcing its cabin bag policies more rigorously than ever. Gate agents are actively measuring bags, and if your bag doesn’t fit the sizer, even by a few centimetres, including wheels, it may be placed in the hold for a fee. Airports like Belfast and London Gatwick are reported to be especially vigilant. Just this week I flew with easyJet to Berlin and back and both sectors I was asked to place my bag in the baggage sizer, I even had a boots bag with some items i had bought at the airport, when i let the check in assistant know it was items I had just bought it was fine.
every single bag is checked at the gate prior to boarding!

Top Tips for Packing Smart with easyJet
Choose a Compliant Bag: Opt for soft-sided holdalls or backpacks that can be slightly compressed if needed.
Wear Bulkier Clothes: Save space by wearing jackets or boots during boarding.
Use Compression Packing Cubes: These help maximize space and keep your belongings organized.
Check Your Bag with the easyJet App: Their bag measurement tool lets you confirm size compliance ahead of your trip.
Don't Overstuff Your Bag: Overfilled bags are more likely to be checked at the gate.
Top Tip: Use a soft-sided holdall or backpack like the Cabin Max Metz 30L (45 x 36 x 20 cm). These can be slightly compressed if needed and are specifically made to comply with easyJet’s free cabin bag limit.
What Not to Pack in Your Hand Luggage
To make the most of your limited cabin space, avoid packing items that will be provided by your accommodation, such as:
Hairdryers: Bulky and often unnecessary, as most hotels provide them.
Towels: Another bulky item best left behind unless you're staying somewhere that doesn’t provide them.
Large Toiletries: Not only do they add weight, but larger liquid items can cause issues at airport security. Travel-sized products or purchasing on arrival are far better options.
By rethinking some of these everyday essentials, you can save valuable room in your hand luggage.
