Here's a travel hack I wasn't expecting to find. What if your hotel status could effectively become airline status? And not just any airline status.
We're talking SkyTeam Elite Plus, potentially unlocking airport lounge access, priority check-in, priority boarding, additional baggage benefits and other perks when travelling with participating SkyTeam airlines.
The route goes something like this:
Hilton Honors Gold → Kenya Airways Asante Gold Elite Plus → SkyTeam Elite Plus
And there's another twist.
If you don't already have Hilton Honors Gold, there's currently a way of getting it without staying 25 nights in Hilton hotels.
This isn't free, and it certainly won't make financial sense for everyone.
But for someone who regularly flies airlines such as Air France, KLM or Virgin Atlantic, this could be a very interesting travel hack indeed.
Let me explain.

Quick Answer: What's the SkyTeam Status Match Hack?
Kenya Airways is currently running a paid Asante Rewards status match.
Unlike many airline status matches, you don't necessarily need elite status with another airline.
Hotel status can qualify too. And the current eligibility table includes:
Hilton Honors Gold → Kenya Airways Asante Gold Elite Plus
Kenya Airways confirms that Gold Elite Plus aligns with SkyTeam Elite Plus benefits. The current hotel-status match to Gold costs $299, and matched status lasts for 12 months before being reviewed against normal qualification requirements. That's where this gets interesting.
What Is SkyTeam?
SkyTeam is one of the world's major airline alliances.
Think of it in the same way as oneworld or Star Alliance: individual airlines remain separate companies, but cooperate across areas such as frequent-flyer benefits, connections and airport lounges.
Participating airlines include names very familiar to UK travellers such as Air France, KLM, Virgin Atlantic and SAS.
And if you fly these airlines regularly, SkyTeam Elite Plus is the status level that starts getting particularly interesting.
What Do You Get With SkyTeam Elite Plus?
The headline benefit for me is obvious.
Airport lounge access.
SkyTeam's published Elite Plus benefits include lounge access with one guest when travelling on or connecting to/from an eligible same-day international flight operated by a SkyTeam airline.
There are other benefits too, including priority check-in, priority boarding, priority baggage handling and additional baggage allowances. In other words, this isn't just a shiny digital membership card. Used regularly, the benefits can have genuine value.
And having just visited the superb new Air France Lounge at Heathrow Terminal 4, you can probably understand why lounge access caught my attention.

The Clever Bit: Kenya Airways Status Match
Kenya Airways has its own frequent-flyer programme called Asante Rewards.
It's currently offering travellers with qualifying existing status the opportunity to apply for a status match and this is unusually broad. You can potentially match from qualifying:
Airline status
Hotel status
Travel rewards credit cards
However, there's a crucial distinction.
Credit-card matches only reach Silver Elite. Hotel status can currently match as high as Gold Elite Plus.
And Gold Elite Plus is what we're interested in, because that's the tier aligned with SkyTeam Elite Plus.

Which Hotel Status Can Get SkyTeam Elite Plus?
Quite a few hotel programmes currently appear in Kenya Airways' eligibility table.
They include qualifying status with:
Hilton Honors
Marriott Bonvoy
IHG One Rewards
World of Hyatt
Accor ALL
GHA Discovery
Radisson Rewards
Wyndham Rewards
among others.
But there's one that particularly caught my attention:
Hilton Honors Gold.
The current Kenya Airways status-match table specifically maps Hilton Honors Gold and Diamond to Asante Gold Elite Plus.
And that's interesting because Hilton Gold is relatively accessible.

Don't Have Hilton Gold? Here's Another Shortcut
Normally, earning Hilton Honors Gold requires 25 nights, 15 stays or $6,000 of eligible spend with Hilton. Gold brings benefits including an 80% points bonus, potential room upgrades and in some countries free breakfast .
But there's another way. The UK Hilton Honors Plus Debit Card gives cardholders Hilton Honors Gold status. Yes, a debit card.
Hilton says its Plus Debit Card provides Gold status along with Hilton Honors Points on eligible everyday spending and that creates the rather wonderful travel-hacking chain:

What Does the Kenya Airways Status Match Cost?
Here's where I need to apply some Plane Honest maths.
It's not cheap.
At the time of writing, Kenya Airways lists the hotel-status match fees as:
Match | Current fee |
Silver Elite | $99 |
Gold Elite Plus | $299 |
Platinum Elite Plus | Not available from hotel status |
So I absolutely wouldn't pay $299 just to get into one airport lounge.
That would be madness.
The question is whether you'd extract enough value from the status over the 12 months to justify it.
Could $299 for SkyTeam Elite Plus Actually Be Worth It?
This comes down almost entirely to how much you travel.
Imagine you regularly fly: Air France, KLM, Virgin Atlantic, SAS and Delta
and other participating SkyTeam airlines. You may potentially be getting lounge access on eligible journeys, guest access, priority airport treatment and baggage benefits repeatedly over the year.
Kenya Airways currently specifically lists Air France, KLM, Virgin Atlantic, SAS, Delta, Korean Air, Vietnam Airlines, Saudia and several other carriers as recognising its Asante elite status.

There's Value in Hilton Gold Too
This is another reason I wouldn't look at the cost purely as: “I'm paying for airline lounge access.”
If you're obtaining Hilton Gold through the Hilton Honors Plus Debit Card, you've also got Hilton Gold.
That itself can deliver value through eligible hotel stays: possible room upgrades, increased points earning and complimentary continental breakfast outside the US.
And you're earning Hilton Honors Points from eligible everyday spending on the card.
I've reviewed the card separately because there's much more to it than the status-match trick:

How to Do the Hilton Gold → SkyTeam Elite Plus Hack
The process is relatively straightforward.
Step 1: Get qualifying hotel status
If you already have Hilton Honors Gold or Diamond, you may already have what you need.
If not, investigate whether the Hilton Honors Plus Debit Card makes financial sense for you independently of this status match.
Step 2: Join Kenya Airways Asante Rewards
You need a free Asante Rewards account before applying for the match. Kenya Airways confirms this is mandatory.
Step 3: Apply for the Kenya Airways status match
You'll need to provide evidence of your qualifying status and pay the relevant application fee.
Step 4: Wait for approval
Kenya Airways says applicants should be informed within three business days after completing the required application and documentation, with approved status appearing in the account within three business days.
Step 5: Add your Asante Rewards number to eligible SkyTeam bookings
Kenya Airways says status is updated across the systems used by participating partners and can be recognised for lounge access once the Asante number is attached to the booking/check-in.
Important: This Status Match Could Disappear
Status matches are promotions.
They're not permanent features of loyalty programmes. The Kenya Airways eligibility page itself says eligibility criteria are subject to change. So if you're reading this several months after publication: check everything again.
I'll update this guide when I spot major changes, but always check the official offer before paying.

Plane Honest: Is This SkyTeam Elite Plus Hack Worth It?
I love a clever travel hack.
But I love one that actually makes financial sense even more.
And this one falls firmly into:
“Brilliant for the right traveller; completely unnecessary for everyone else.”
If you fly SkyTeam once a year? Don't bother.
If you only want one airport lounge visit? Definitely don't spend $299.
There are far cheaper ways of getting lounge access.
But if you're regularly flying Air France, KLM, Virgin Atlantic and other participating SkyTeam airlines, particularly with checked baggage or a travelling companion?
Now this becomes much more interesting.
SkyTeam Status Match FAQ
Can Hilton Gold be matched to SkyTeam Elite Plus?
Currently, yes, indirectly. Kenya Airways currently lists Hilton Honors Gold as eligible to match to Asante Gold Elite Plus, which aligns with SkyTeam Elite Plus benefits.
How much does the Kenya Airways Hilton status match cost?
The current hotel-status application fee for Kenya Airways Gold Elite Plus is $299.
How long does Kenya Airways matched status last?
Kenya Airways says the matched status runs for 12 months, after which your tier is reviewed based on qualifying activity.
Does SkyTeam Elite Plus give lounge access?
Yes, subject to SkyTeam's access conditions. Published Elite Plus benefits include eligible international lounge access with one guest, regardless of class of travel.
Can I get SkyTeam Elite Plus from a credit card status match?
Not directly through this Kenya Airways promotion. Kenya Airways says travel-rewards credit cards can currently match only to Silver Elite; qualifying hotel status can reach Gold Elite Plus.
Is Hilton Gold worth getting just for this status match?
I wouldn't get Hilton Gold only to spend another $299 on this match. But if you already have or want Hilton Gold for its hotel benefits and regularly fly participating SkyTeam airlines, the combination becomes much more compelling.
