Luxury for Less Is My Favourite Upgrade
Who says luxury travel has to cost the earth? Whether you’re sipping prosecco in Heathrow’s No 1 Lounge, flying Qatar Airways’ Q suite for fewer miles than an easyJet flight from London to Jersey, or scoring a free stopover in a five-star hotel, these are the Plane Luxury Escapes that redefine luxury for less. This is for travellers who want comfort, perks, and value, without paying full premium prices.
I’ve tested hundreds of flights, lounges, and hotels across six continents and I’ve learned one thing: luxury is a mindset, not a price tag. With the right mix of loyalty, timing, and insider know-how, you can unlock VIP perks for a fraction of the cost. Here’s how I travel better, not just cheaper and how you can too.
1. Access VIP Lounges with Priority Pass
Access via Priority Pass, easy entry every time. I use my Priority Pass for instant entry.
Priority Pass opens doors to over 1800 airport lounges and travel experiences in 725 airports across 145 countries.
Here are some of the best lounges in the world, all accessible with your Priority Pass!
Virgin Atlantic Lounge, New York (JFK)
Airport Lounge Membership Plans (2026 Pricing)
Plan | Best For | Price (First Year) | Member Visits | Guest Fee |
Standard | Occasional Traveller | £69 | £24 per visit | £24 |
Standard Plus | Regular Traveller | £259 | 10 free | £24 |
Prestige | Frequent Flyer | £419 | Unlimited | £24 |
2. Collect Miles Every Time You Fly (Even on Low-Cost Airlines)
If you think collecting miles is only for business-class travellers, think again. I flew to Doha in Qatar Airways Qsuite for under 40,000 Avios and to New York in Virgin Atlantic Premium Economy for just 11,000 Virgin Points.
Here’s how you can do it too:
Convert your Tesco Clubcard into Avios and grab up to 5,000 bonus points, more about that here.
Earn miles on Vueling, Iberia, and Finnair via the British Airways Club
Pay with an Amex, Virgin, or airline-branded credit card for double points on travel.
Plane Tip: Follow my Avios Points Tip of the Week for insider tricks on how to earn points.
3. Take Advantage of Free 5-Star Stopovers
Did you know some airlines will literally put you up in a luxury hotel for free?
I call these “Luxury Layovers” and they’re the easiest Plane Luxury Escapes you’ll ever book.
Qatar Airways offers free or low-cost 5-star stays in Doha, perfect for a night in style before continuing your journey. Read more in my Doha Stopovers guide
Etihad Airways has hidden perks for stopovers in Abu Dhabi, including hotel discounts and lounge access.
Turkish Airlines and Emirates also offer similar deals in Istanbul and Dubai perfect opportunities for luxury-for-less travellers.

Plane Tip: Choose long layovers (6–24 hours) to make the most of the stopover without losing a travel day.
4. Join Luxury Hotel Loyalty Programs
Elite status unlocks real value, especially when you know where to look.
Brands like Marriott Bonvoy, Hilton Honors, and Hyatt Privé reward loyalty with:
Free breakfast for two
Early check-in & late checkout
Complimentary room upgrades
Welcome drinks or points bonuses
Even better? Many credit cards come with automatic elite status, meaning you start at the upgrade level before even earning a single stay.

I became a Hilton Honors Silver card holder, just by using this travel debit card, which is actually quite an impressive card to use whilst travelling
I managed to stay at this Hilton Doubletree hotel in Beijing thanks to my debit card!

Plane Tip: Combine loyalty schemes with Secret Escapes Luxe Club to book luxury stays for less, which leads me on top number 5......
5. Book Smart: Secret Escapes
Forget endless scrolling on hotel comparison sites. I book many of my Plane Luxury Escapes through Secret Escapes Luxe Club which specialise in handpicked 4- and 5-star hotels at up to 60% off.
It’s where I found deals for:

6. Use Airline Bidding Systems for First-Class Upgrades
Some airlines let you bid for upgrades to business or first class and it can be cheaper than you think.
Airlines offering upgrade bids:
Etihad Airways-My Etihad Economy Review.
Norse Atlantic Airways-My Norse Atlantic Premium Review.
Air New Zealand, Austrian and Finnair also run similar programs.
British Airways are currently trialing this.
Virgin Atlantic offers an auction-style bidding system called "Your Bid" for upgrading to Upper Class (their business class) from Economy or Premium Economy

Plane Tip: Aim to bid 20–40% below the airline’s suggested price. Too low, and it’s ignored; too high, and you might overpay.
7. Drive to the Terminal in Style and Save
I use Meet & Greet Airport Parking for the fastest, most convenient start to any trip.
Call your parking company 20–30 minutes before arrival. A driver meets you at the terminal, takes your keys, and you walk straight to check-in. On your return, your car is waiting outside.

Or Book Uber Executive or Bolt Lux to the airport, I often get 10–20% off promos making it better value than trains and way more convenient.

8. Shop Luxury & Earn Miles
You can earn Avios or Virgin Points by shopping online through the airlines’ shopping portals.
Here’s how I turn spending into flying:
Buy through Harrods, Selfridges, or Apple and many others on the Avios e-Store
Stack that with a points credit card for double rewards
Look for bonus offers often 6x or up to 14x points on luxury retailers
Plane Tip: Bookmark the e-Store and check before every online shop, it’s the easiest miles hack there is.
9. Pack Smart, Luxury Luggage for Less
Your suitcase says a lot about your travel style.
My personal rotation:
Rimowa Cabin Plus sleek, durable, designer
Briggs & Riley Baseline expandable genius for long hauls
But here’s my affordable dupe:
looks high-end, fits Virgin and Qatar cabin dimensions, and costs a fraction of designer brands.
Pair it with noise-cancelling headphones, and you’ll look first-class in any queue.
10. You Can Even bid to Upgrade Your Train
Why stop in the sky? I use Seatfrog to bid for last-minute upgrades on trains a first-class experience for economy fares.
Read my full Seatfrog upgrade guide and start arriving in style before your plane even takes off. Seatfrog Review: How to Upgrade Train Tickets to First Class for Less
