Beijing Layover Guide: What to Do Between Flights (China Stopover Tips)

If you’ve got a layover in Beijing and you’re wondering whether it’s worth leaving the airport the answer is yes.
With the right plan, you can visit the Great Wall, explore the Forbidden City, and eat some of the best food in China… all between flights.
But here’s the part most guides won’t tell you:
China is not as easy as it used to be.
On my last trip, I assumed it would be similar to when I visited over 10 years ago. It wasn’t.
My cards didn’t work properly
Google Maps didn’t load
Gmail, WhatsApp, and social media were blocked
Even basic things like ordering food became difficult
This guide is based on what actually works now, so you can avoid the same mistakes and turn your Beijing layover into a smooth, memorable stopover.

Can You Leave the Airport on a Beijing Layover?
Yes and you absolutely should if you have enough time.
👉 As a general rule:
6–8 hours → stay near the airport or do a short trip
10–12 hours → Great Wall or city highlights
24+ hours → full Beijing experience
Beijing Capital Airport (PEK) and Daxing Airport (PKX) are both well connected, but traffic can be heavy, so always allow buffer time.

What to Do on a Short Beijing Layover (6–12 Hours)
If you’ve got limited time, keep it simple and structured.
Option 1: The Great Wall (Best Use of Time)
This is the most popular stopover experience — and for good reason.
Mutianyu section = less crowded, more scenic
Cable car up, optional toboggan down
Around 1.5 hours from central Beijing
The easiest way to do this on a layover is a pre-booked tour with hotel or airport pickup
This avoids:
language barriers
transport confusion
wasting time

24 Hours in Beijing (Perfect Layover Itinerary)
If you’ve got a longer stopover, you can do Beijing properly.
Day Plan:
Morning
Tiananmen Square
Forbidden City
Afternoon
Temple of Heaven or Summer Palace
Evening
Peking Duck dinner
Hutong walk or local markets

Where to Stay on a Beijing Stopover
If your layover includes an overnight stay, location and convenience matter.
I stayed at the DoubleTree by Hilton Beijing, which is a solid option for a stopover:

Plane for Your Beijing Stopover Visit:
Bring your passport; you’ll need it to enter.
Book online well in advance. Forbidden City tickets often sell out.
Arrive early to beat the heat and the crowds.
The BIG Mistake Most Travellers Make (VPN & Connectivity)
This is where most people get caught out, including me.
I landed in China thinking:“It’ll be fine, I’ve travelled before”
It wasn’t.
No Google Maps
No Gmail
No Instagram, WhatsApp, or Facebook
No easy way to check bookings or emails
You are effectively offline without preparation.
You NEED a VPN (Before You Arrive)
Once you’re in China, downloading one is difficult or impossible.

How to Pay for Things in Beijing
This has changed massively in recent years.
Cash is less common
Cards often don’t work reliably
Mobile payments dominate (WeChat Pay / Alipay)
👉 As a visitor:
Bring some cash
Have a backup card
Expect friction
This is another reason to plan ahead, Beijing is not as plug-and-play as Europe.
Best Places to Eat in Beijing:
Da Dong: A refined spot for Peking Duck.
Siji Minfu: A bit more casual but still high quality.
Wangfujing Snack Street: Good for street eats, from dumplings to deep-fried bugs (yes, really).
Local noodle joints: Look for queues of locals and open kitchens, you’ll rarely go wrong.

Even on a short visit, food is a highlight.

Is Beijing Worth Visiting?
Without question. It’s one of the few places where you can go from standing on a 700-year-old city wall to ordering bubble tea in a neon-lit mall within the same hour. There’s history, chaos, order, and beauty all often at the same time.

The Great Wall of China.
Ancient imperial architecture (Forbidden City, Summer Palace).
Traditional Beijing cuisine (especially duck).
The distinctive hutong neighborhoods.
Hosting the 2008 Olympics and the dramatic Bird’s Nest Stadium.
A rich cultural scene with opera, martial arts, and local markets.
Non-Touristy Things to Do in Beijing
Once you’ve hit the big hitters, dive into these lesser-known spots:
Panjiayuan Antique Market: A massive flea market with calligraphy, jade, and Mao-era oddities.
Lama Temple (Yonghe Gong): A peaceful Tibetan Buddhist temple often overlooked.
Beijing Planetarium: Low-key and great if you're into space or traveling with kids.
Local mahjong parlours and parks: Head to Ritan Park or Ditan Park to see locals dancing, singing, or playing cards. Always a lively vibe.
Hidden hutong coffee shops: Try Soloist or Metal Hands for top-tier coffee in a vintage setting.

Beijing is surprisingly family-friendly. Here are a few things that kids will love:
