Check-In Chaos & A Digital Headache
Check-in began in a lounge-like setting with serious private jet vibes, very quiet, premium, and smooth on the surface. There was even a private security lane, which added a luxurious touch. However, my departure from Beijing didn’t go off without hiccups. I totally missed that I needed an Australian ETA, and although it’s usually a breeze to apply for, it turned into a nightmare due to China’s internet restrictions!
Trying to access Gmail to verify my account for the visa was nearly impossible without a strong VPN. This was 100% my responsibility, no excuses, but I was still surprised that China Southern Airlines didn’t send any reminder emails or online check-in prompts about the ETA requirement.
In fact, the online check-in process was painfully frustrating. Multi-layered authenticator verifications made it so difficult that I gave up entirely. Definitely not the most passenger-friendly system, especially for international travellers.

China Southern Airlines Business Class First Leg: Beijing to Shenzhen (CZ3168, A350)
Checking in for this flight showed an a321 single aisle configuration but boarding at Beijing it was clear that the aircraft had been upgraded to a widebody A350. Infact Ground staff were heavily marketing upgrades.

The China Southern A350 felt modern, clean, and relatively new. The seat was exceptionally comfortable, and the in-flight entertainment (IFE) was outstanding, a huge screen with a great selection of films, shows, and music. The finish on the cabin felt a little “faux luxury” (think, shiny laminate wood), but overall it was stylish enough to feel premium.
The crew were absolutely lovely, warm, and genuinely helpful.
Catering was served on a tray and was beautifully presented with very authentic Chinese cuisine, which I appreciated. However, the experience felt more like Premium Economy than true Business Class. Still, for a short domestic sector, it was excellent.

Transiting in China flying China Southern Airlines Business Class
In this China Southern Airlines Business Class Review, I wanted to share my experience transiting through China while connecting from a domestic to an international flight. After arriving on a domestic leg, I had to fully exit the arrivals hall and re-enter through international departures, there was no dedicated transit lane or shortcut for business class passengers. The walk between terminals was long, and with only about an hour between flights, there was no time to visit the business class lounge. However, one highlight was the arrival process: although my flight parked at a remote stand, I was quickly transferred by a VIP bus positioned right next to the aircraft, which made the connection much smoother.
Thanks to China’s 144-hour visa-free transit policy, I was able to complete the transfer without needing a visa, so I made it through OK, despite the long walk and no time for lounging.

China Southern Airlines Business Class Amenity Kit
The amenity kit was fairly basic , Made by Rituals.
It included:
Toothbrush and toothpaste
Moisturiser and lip balm
Eye mask and earplugs
Slippers
All items were usable but nothing to write home about. A functional kit rather than a luxury offering.

China Southern Airlines Business Class Food & Beverage
Now let’s talk food and drink, a bit of a mixed bag. The catering was distinctly Chinese in flavour and style, which was appreciated, but the Western options were weak. Also, no champagne was offered on board, and when I did request a glass, I received a mere mouthful. Not ideal.
There was plenty of tea and a decent range of wines, though the selection did run out halfway through the flight. overall, I’d rate the food offering as underwhelming compared to other international carriers.

Top Tip: I put an AirTag in my suitcase, I was able to check that my case was also enjoying its transit stop at Shenzhen.

China Southern Airlines Business Class Entertainment & Comfort
One area where China Southern really impressed was the in-flight entertainment. The A350 system in particular was a standout, crisp visuals, smooth UI, and a huge catalogue of content. The headphones were high quality too, totally blocking out noise.
Seats on both legs were fully lie-flat. The A350’s staggered layout was noticeably more private and refined than the A330’s older design, but both were good enough for sleeping and relaxing.

Second Leg: Shenzhen to Sydney (CZ3071, A330)
This flight was on an older A330 and due to y previous sector on a brand spanking new A350 my expectations needed adjusting. The cabin felt dated, and the hard product was showing its age, older seats and a general “functional but uninspired” design. That said, the seat was still lie-flat and reasonably comfortable, and again, the service was excellent.
The entertainment system was still very good, with plenty to keep me occupied for the overnight flight to Australia. I watched Gladiator 2, wow what a movie! I never felt bored a big plus.

China Southern Airlines Business Class Service & Staff
Where China Southern Airlines Business Class really shines is its crew and ground staff. From check-in to landing, everyone I interacted with was professional, helpful, and kind. They really did make the journey feel special. The effort and energy put into the passenger experience was excellent.
Visa Free travel through China
One of the major advantages when flying China Southern Airlines Business Class is the ability to take advantage of China's 144-hour visa-free transit policy. As a traveller connecting to a third country, I was able to enter China without a visa, simply by presenting my onward ticket at immigration. This made the transit experience far less stressful and allowed me to navigate through the airport with ease. Although I didn't have time to fully enjoy the airport facilities due to a tight connection, knowing that China Southern Airlines Business Class passengers can travel visa-free under the right conditions is a huge bonus for those planning multi-leg international journeys. It’s an excellent option for travellers who want a smooth and efficient transit experience without the hassle of applying for a visa in advance.
Entering China at Beijing from my flight from Doha was super slow! I was ushered to a seating area with a form amongst around 12 other travellers, we were made to wait for around 1 hour 30 minutes until an officer eventually logged in and strated to process the 12 passengers.
Make sure you have your items printed out, ticket leaving China and details of your gotel booking. As I had issues accessing data and information from my phone due to the great Firewall of China! I wasn.t as organised as i usually am. Do Not travel to China without a good reliable VPN!

China Southern Airlines Business Class Sky Pearl Club
China Southern Airlines' frequent flyer program, the Sky Pearl Club, allows members to earn and redeem miles across a network of partner airlines. While you cannot directly transfer Sky Pearl miles to other carriers' programs, you can redeem them for award flights on partner airlines such as Air France, KLM, Delta, Korean Air, and American Airlines .

China Southern Airlines Business Class Final Thoughts
I paid GBP £894.70 for this itinerary, which included Beijing to Sydney via Shenzhen in Business Class. For that price, it’s hard to complain. The first leg on the A350 was excellent, while the second was just okay, but totally fair for the cost.
Would I fly China Southern Business Class again? Yes – but only with a good VPN or eSIM. Transiting through China without reliable internet access made things unnecessarily stressful, especially when things went wrong.
Traveling to China? Here's why you need a VPN – and why NordVPN is the perfect choice (from just £2.39/month!):

Overall, despite some hiccups, I really liked China Southern Airlines. With some updates to their tech and international passenger support, they could easily become a stronger competitor in the long-haul business class market.
