Welcome back to another edition of Plane News Weekly, your Sunday roundup of airline news, airport lounges, loyalty updates, travel deals and everything happening in the world of aviation.
This week, American Airlines has revealed another batch of Airbus A321XLR routes, Discover Airlines is giving Bristol, Glasgow and Inverness new links to Germany, and Plaza Premium has opened not one but two lounges at Bangkok Suvarnabhumi.
There are also two very tempting points offers. Amex is offering up to 12,000 Membership Rewards points for adding your first supplementary cardholder, while the biggest Hilton Honors debit card offer so far ends Monday 7 September.
I’ve also taken a closer look at Emirates’ rather fabulous new Premium Economy seat and TUI’s first loyalty programme.

American Airlines Announces New European Routes for 2027
American Airlines has revealed five new European routes for summer 2027: Philadelphia to Reykjavik, Vienna and Porto, plus New York JFK to Amsterdam and Nice. Four will use its long-range Airbus A321XLR.
American will also restore a fourth daily JFK–Heathrow flight, although questions remain over whether another service in the wider BA and American joint schedule could be cut.
Plane Honest: The A321XLR is allowing airlines to open thinner long-haul routes that may not fill a large widebody. Vienna, Porto, Amsterdam and Nice all make sense, but an overnight Atlantic crossing on a single-aisle aircraft will not be everyone’s idea of luxury.
Discover Airlines Is Coming to Bristol, Glasgow and Inverness
Discover Airlines is adding its first scheduled routes to England and Scotland in summer 2027. The Lufthansa Group leisure carrier will fly Frankfurt to Glasgow, Bristol and Inverness, alongside Munich to Glasgow, using Airbus A320 aircraft.
Frequencies vary from weekly to six times per week, but these are useful new links, particularly the direct Frankfurt–Inverness service.
Emirates’ New Premium Economy Seat Is Giving Business Class
Emirates has unveiled a new fully electric Premium Economy seat for its latest Airbus A350 deliveries, complete with a full-height privacy divider, cradle-style recline, wireless charging and a 4K screen.
The 28-seat cabin will remain in a 2-3-2 layout. It is not a flat bed, but this is giving Business Class far more than most Premium Economy seats currently dare.
I recently flew Emirates Premium Economy and came away disappointed. Could this new seat tempt me back? Rather unexpectedly, yes.
Plaza Premium Opens Two New Bangkok Airport Lounges
Plaza Premium has opened two 24-hour lounges in Concourse G at Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport.
The 51-seat Plaza Premium First offers à la carte dining, premium cocktails, showers and concierge service, with entry from around £54 for two hours. The larger standard lounge has live Thai cooking stations, showers and space for 98 guests, starting at around £39.
The two new lounges are not currently listed by Priority Pass. However, Priority Pass already lists 16 lounge experiences at Bangkok Suvarnabhumi, including several Miracle and Coral lounges across the airport. Always check the app for the lounge nearest your departure gate and its current access conditions.
The timing is interesting because UK–Thailand capacity is growing significantly this winter. Norse Atlantic is launching Gatwick to Phuket and increasing Manchester to Bangkok to four flights per week from December, while Virgin Atlantic begins its new three-times-weekly Heathrow to Phuket service in October.
Plane Honest: £54 for two hours is not cheap when Priority Pass members already have a substantial choice at Bangkok.

Plane Points Tip of the Week: Up to 12,000 Amex Points for Adding a Supplementary Cardholder
American Express has brought back its enhanced bonuses until 31 October 2026 for eligible cardmembers adding their first supplementary cardholder:
The Platinum Card: 12,000 Membership Rewards points, increased from 5,000
Preferred Rewards Gold: 9,000 Membership Rewards points, increased from 3,000
Marriott Bonvoy Amex: 6,000 Marriott Bonvoy points, increased from 3,000
Nectar Amex: 6,000 Nectar points, increased from 3,000
Amex Rewards Credit Card: 5,000 Membership Rewards points, increased from 2,000
The Platinum bonus can become 12,000 Avios or Virgin Points. Eligible Platinum supplementary cardholders can also receive benefits including Priority Pass membership and selected hotel status.
Last Chance: Up to 50,000 Hilton Honors Points
The Hilton Honors Plus Debit Card’s biggest public offer so far ends on Monday 7 September 2026.
You receive 20,000 points after your first transaction and another 30,000 after spending £2,500 in foreign currency within six months. The £150-a-year card also gives you Hilton Gold status and the opportunity to earn up to 35 Elite Qualifying Nights, depending on your spending.
It links to your existing UK current account and charges a 0.5% foreign-exchange fee.
Plane Honest: The 50,000 points are tempting, but the second 30,000-point chunk requires £2,500 of foreign-currency spending. It makes sense if that fits your genuine travel plans, not if you manufacture spending purely to chase a bonus.
TUI Smiles Rewards Club Is Now Live in the UK
TUI has finally launched its first global loyalty programme in the UK and it is free to join.
Members collect Smiles on eligible holidays, hotels, cruises, flights and experiences, moving through three levels to unlock offers, travel treats and priority customer service. New members currently receive 200 Smiles.
Unlike Avios, Smiles do not have a fixed cash value. Think membership levels and perks rather than a free flight currency.
Plane Honest: It is free and offers immediate benefits, so anyone who already books with TUI might as well join. Just do not let a spinning globe and a pile of Smiles distract you from comparing the final holiday price elsewhere.

More Barbados Flights From Gatwick and Manchester
Barbados is getting more UK capacity this winter. British Airways adds a daily seasonal Gatwick service from 25 October, while Virgin Atlantic restores Manchester–Barbados four times per week from 26 October until 19 March 2027.
The routes also improve one-stop access from the Gulf through airline partnerships, but for UK travellers the benefit is simpler: more direct seats and less dependence on Heathrow.
Plane Honest: Gatwick regaining a daily Barbados service is excellent news for travellers across southern England, while Virgin’s Manchester route saves northern passengers from trekking down to Heathrow before their holiday has even begun.

FINAL BOARDING CALL
American and Discover Airlines are opening new routes, Plaza Premium has finally arrived in Bangkok and Emirates is pushing Premium Economy considerably closer to Business Class.
Meanwhile, there are easy Amex points available for some existing cardholders, but the Hilton offer really is at the gate with the doors about to close.
