The Ritz-Carlton Istanbul Review: Is It Worth Staying Here? Evet!

Is The Ritz-Carlton Istanbul worth staying at? Evet, yes! For a few days in Istanbul, the outstanding service, elegant room, lovely partial Bosphorus view and wonderfully calm pool terrace made this one of my favourite luxury hotel stays in the city. The spa and gym were excellent, and I thoroughly enjoyed breakfast even if a couple of Turkish items failed my Turkish partner’s authenticity test.
We arrived around 2 pm and waited 20–30 minutes for the room, but the hotel’s standard check-in is 3 pm and we were given a comfortable place to wait. That was a minor part of an otherwise brilliant stay.
Istanbul is glorious, but it does not have an off switch. Ferries, hills, horns, shops, food, more food, and the occasional traffic jam that makes you question every choice you have ever made. I love it. I also love having somewhere to escape it.
That was the appeal of The Ritz-Carlton, Istanbul. It has the polished room and impressive facilities you expect from a five-star hotel, but the part that made this stay feel special was the service. The people here did not just perform luxury; they made us feel welcome.
Where is The Ritz-Carlton Istanbul?
The hotel is in the Dolmabahçe area of Şişli, near Beşiktaş and Taksim. That was a useful location for the kind of Istanbul trip we wanted: a few busy days exploring, balanced with time to actually enjoy the hotel.
We used Uber a lot. It was convenient, particularly when we were tired, although no luxury hotel has yet found a way to cancel Istanbul traffic. Before booking anything across the city at a set time, I would check the journey rather than trusting how close two places appear on a map.
For something nearer to the hotel, Nişantaşı has a great mix of shops and restaurants. We could also head towards the Beşiktaş waterfront. If a ferry is part of your plan, check its current route and departure pier first, Istanbul has several waterfront stops, and “the ferry” is not a single service to everywhere.
And please make time for Ortaköy if you can. It is one of my favourite areas in Istanbul. The waterfront is lovely, and the waffles and kumpir, baked potatoes piled with toppings are epic. There is a place for Nobu, and there is absolutely a place for an enormous potato by the Bosphorus.
Arriving and checking in
We arrived at around 2 pm, and the room was not quite ready. We waited approximately 20–30 minutes.
That sounds like a check-in niggle until you look at the timing: the hotel currently lists 3 pm as its standard check-in time, so we had turned up early. Rather than leave us standing around with our bags, the team invited us to wait in a lovely lounge area with comfortable seating and a tea and coffee machine.
Our room: elegant, but let’s be honest about the view
The room looked and felt like a proper five-star hotel room. The design was elegant and the furnishings felt high quality. More importantly, it was comfortable somewhere I wanted to come back to after a full day out, not simply an instagram room to photograph and then leave.
We had a partial sea view with a glimpse of the Bosphorus. This was not an uninterrupted panorama of the water from every corner of the room. If a full Bosphorus view is your must-have, look carefully at the room categories before paying extra. The view you get matters more than the view on the hotel’s homepage.
The bathroom had a particularly nice touch: Diptyque shampoo, conditioner and lotions. They felt luxurious, although there was also a very clear warning about taking the bottles home. Pop one in your bag, and the notice said €45 would be added to your room bill. Enjoy them in the room; leave them in the room.
The pool terrace: an oasis above the chaos
If I had to choose the place that best captures this hotel, it would be the pool terrace. Down below, Istanbul was doing its busy, noisy, brilliant thing. Up here, everything felt calmer.
The terrace is a lovely oasis for a city stay. You do not need to be someone who spends eight hours on a sun lounger to appreciate it. Even a quieter stretch between sightseeing and dinner made me feel as though I had squeezed an actual holiday into my city break.
The hotel calls this area The Roof, with a terrace and infinity pool. The outdoor pool is seasonal, so check whether it will be open during your visit. I would hate for somebody to book specifically for terrace-pool time in the wrong season and then blame me for Istanbul’s weather.
Spa Soul, indoor pool and gym
The spa area is stunning. I loved having somewhere to swim, sit, drink tea and decompress. The gym was amazing too, another part of the hotel that felt properly thought through rather than added to tick a five-star box.
The hotel’s Spa Soul facilities include an indoor pool and Turkish hammam, and it offers treatments separately. I am not going to describe a hammam treatment I did not have or invent a massage review. What I can tell you is that the spa setting itself made it very easy to slow down, which is a luxury in this particular city.
If wellness is important to your hotel choice, check which areas you can use with your room booking and which treatments need an appointment or extra payment. The indoor pool is a useful option when the seasonal terrace pool is unavailable.
Breakfast: impressive, with a Turkish second opinion
I thoroughly enjoyed breakfast. There was a wide choice, including Turkish items alongside the more familiar hotel-breakfast favourites, and it felt like a lovely start to the day.
I also had a Turkish partner at the table, which is both wonderful and a slightly more demanding quality-control system for Turkish food. A couple of the delicacies did not pass his authenticity test. I trusted his verdict, even though I enjoyed what I ate.
That is not a dramatic complaint about breakfast. It is a reminder that a polished five-star buffet and the breakfast someone remembers from childhood are not always going to be the same thing. We still looked forward to eating there.
Breakfast is served at Atölye, the hotel’s Anatolian dining venue. Whether breakfast is included depends on the rate you choose, so check the booking details instead of assuming that a five-star price automatically covers it.
Nobu Istanbul and what we did not review
Yes, there is a Nobu restaurant at The Ritz-Carlton Istanbul. If you want a special evening at the hotel rather than another journey through traffic, that is a very tempting option.
But I did not eat at Nobu during this stay. Another review might give you a full tasting-menu breakdown; it would be misleading for me to borrow that experience and turn it into mine. The hotel also lists The Roof, Atölye, Limoré and Bleu Lounge among its dining options, but this remains a review of the stay we actually had.
I would rather leave you with an honest “I would consider Nobu next time” than pretend I know which dish you should order. Besides, Istanbul has so many places to eat outside a hotel that you should not feel obliged to have every meal in-house just because you are staying somewhere lovely.
The service: the best thing about this hotel
This is where The Ritz-Carlton Istanbul really separated itself for me.
Every member of staff we dealt with seemed focused on the guest. Requests were handled warmly. Nothing felt like too much trouble. It had the polish you expect at this level, but it also had personality.
Guest relations manager Rio was especially friendly and stopped to chat with us a few times. Those moments were not elaborate gestures or an expensive “luxury experience.” They were human. Rio remembered that guests are people, not just room numbers.
I spent years working in aviation, where you quickly learn that a journey can be transformed by the way someone speaks to you. The best service is not always the fanciest service. Sometimes it is a person taking a moment to check in, help you out or make you feel at ease.
That is what I will remember about this stay long after I forget the exact arrangement of the furniture.
Is it one of the best hotels in Istanbul?
For our few days in Istanbul, it was an excellent choice. The combination of service, room quality, terrace and spa made it one of the best luxury hotel experiences I have personally had here.
I am not going to call it the best hotel in Istanbul as though I have secretly slept my way through every five-star property in the city. “Best” depends on what you want. If your itinerary is centred almost entirely on Sultanahmet and the historic sights, you may prefer a base closer to them. If you care most about an uninterrupted Bosphorus view, make sure you book the room category that gives you one.
But if you want somewhere elegant, welcoming and genuinely relaxing, with access to the Dolmabahçe, Beşiktaş and Taksim side of the city, this hotel makes a strong case for itself.
Marriott Bonvoy: a useful extra
The Ritz-Carlton is part of Marriott Bonvoy, so an eligible paid booking can earn points and elite night credits. Marriott’s earning information lists The Ritz-Carlton among its participating brands. Always check the rules for your actual rate and booking channel, especially if you are booking through a third party.
If you collect hotel points, that is a welcome bonus. I would not let the points decide the entire stay, though. For me, the reason to come back would be the experience particularly the staff and that glorious terrace.
My Plane Honest Verdict
Would I stay at The Ritz-Carlton Istanbul again? Evet!
The service was outstanding, Rio and the team made us feel genuinely welcome, and the pool terrace gave us a calm escape from a wonderfully chaotic city. The room was elegant and comfortable, the partial Bosphorus view was lovely, the spa and gym were impressive, and I enjoyed breakfast despite my partner’s Turkish authenticity footnote.
The wait for the room happened because we arrived before the hotel’s published check-in time, and the team gave us somewhere nice to sit. The Diptyque toiletries were a treat just do not accidentally turn them into a €45 souvenir.
This hotel got something more important than polished luxury right: it made us want to return.
