Before I get on to the review of the private walking tour of Stone Town, here are some frequently asked questions I get asked about Zanzibar,

Zanzibar Map

Zanzibar City

Zanzibar City is the capital and largest city of Zanzibar. It has two main parts:

  • Stone Town: The historic area known for its winding streets, old Arab houses, bazaars, and cultural landmarks.

  • Ng'ambo: The more modern part of the city, offering contemporary shopping centers and local markets.

Stone Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the cultural heart of the island.

Stone Town, Zanzibar

Stone Town is a must-visit destination in Zanzibar known for its rich history and architecture. Key highlights include:

  • House of Wonders (Beit-al-Ajaib): A 19th-century palace.

  • Forodhani Gardens: A lively night food market.

  • Old Slave Market: A poignant historical site and Anglican cathedral.

  • Freddie Mercury’s House: Birthplace of Queen’s legendary singer.

How Big is Zanzibar?

Zanzibar Island (Unguja) covers about 1,666 square kilometers (643 square miles). It is about 85 kilometers (53 miles) long and 39 kilometers (24 miles) wide at its widest point. Zanzibar is part of the Zanzibar Archipelago, which includes Pemba Island and smaller islets.

Is Zanzibar Safe?

Zanzibar is generally safe for tourists. However, keep these tips in mind:

  • Petty Theft: Be cautious of pickpockets, especially in busy areas like Stone Town.

  • Beach Safety: Do not leave valuables unattended on beaches.

  • Health: Take precautions against mosquito-borne diseases such as malaria.

  • Cultural Sensitivity: Zanzibar is predominantly Muslim, so dress modestly, especially in Stone Town and during Ramadan.

Most visitors enjoy a trouble-free trip as long as they practice common sense and respect local customs.

Where can I see a giant tortoise in Zanzibar?

The Aldabra giant tortoise can be found on Changuu Island (Prison Island) near Stone Town. These majestic creatures were brought to the island from the Seychelles and are a major tourist attraction. Visitors can interact with and feed these tortoises, some of which are over 100 years old.

Private Walking Tour Review

A Walk and talk with Local Insight

We began our day by meeting our guide near the city centre, just steps away from the famous Old Fort. Our guide, a local Zanzibari with a passion for history from Happy Bike Tours, a fantastic local tour operator in Zanzibar, greeted us warmly. I booked it all in advance with Get Your Guide who I highly recommend and they have such amazing variety of trips and so many things to do in Zanzibar.

He quickly made us feel at home in this ancient city, pointing out a mix of Arab, Persian, Indian, and African influences that define the unique Swahili culture of Zanzibar. Having grown up here, he knew Stone Town inside and out, and his insider stories made every corner we turned feel like an unveiling of something special.

The Journey Through Stone Town’s Past: Slave Market & Iconic Sites

Our first stop was one of the most poignant sites in Stone Town, the former Slave Market. This deeply moving site tells the story of Zanzibar’s painful role in the East African slave trade. The museum on-site offers a vivid recount of that dark period, with exhibits and displays that honor the lives of those who suffered.

From there, we walked towards the Old Fort, another notable site near the waterfront. Built in the 17th century by the Omani Arabs, this impressive fortress has witnessed Zanzibar’s vibrant yet tumultuous history. Today, it stands as a bustling cultural center where locals gather for music and dance performances.

Wandering Through the Spice Markets and Narrow Alleys

Next, we delved into Stone Town’s maze-like alleyways. The streets here are filled with the aromas of cloves, cinnamon, and nutmeg, spices that have long been the island’s economic backbone. Our guide led us to a bustling market where we could see (and smell!) fresh spices piled high in vibrant colours, and lots of fish!

As we navigated the narrow alleys, we marveled at Stone Town’s unique architecture massive carved wooden doors, intricate balconies, and a blend of Arab, Indian, and European design elements. The famous Zanzibar doors, known for their intricate brass-studded patterns and symbolic motifs.

A Brush with Freddie Mercury and Zanzibar’s Artistic Soul

Music is a fundamental part of Zanzibari culture, and few places reflect this better than Stone Town. Our tour included a stop at the childhood home of one of the city’s most famous sons, Freddie Mercury. While the museum entrance was optional (we decided to save it for another day), standing before the house where the legendary Queen frontman grew up felt surreal.

Stone Town is also home to a vibrant art scene, with local galleries displaying pieces by Zanzibari artists.

Sunset and Seafood: Dining Recommendations and Farewell

As our tour wound down, our guide suggested a few spots to end the evening with a meal and a view. he highly recommended Emerson on Hurumzi Hotel for its rooftop restaurant, renowned for traditional Zanzibari dishes and stunning panoramic views. The African House Hotel also boasts a beautiful sunset view over the Indian Ocean. For seafood lovers, he recommended Cape Town Fish Market for its selection of freshly caught seafood and great service. our tour guide was so good that he recommended us a tailor made trip to Nakupenda Sandbank. We did this the next day and it was totally outstanding!!

Why a Private Tour is the Way to Go

With so much to take in, a private walking tour is truly the ideal way to explore Stone Town. Our guide was flexible, allowing us to linger at spots we found intriguing and tailoring explanations to our interests.

The flexibility of a private tour also allowed us to soak up Stone Town’s charm without feeling rushed. For travellers seeking a richer, more intimate connection with Zanzibar, a private guide provides a level of insight that’s impossible to achieve with larger groups or solo exploring.
