Big Fleet News for BA Flights from Gatwick
Big fleet news for British Airways flights from Gatwick.
British Airways has confirmed plans to replace its ageing Boeing 777-200 aircraft operating from London Gatwick with newer Boeing 787-10 Dreamliners from 2029.
The aircraft will operate British Airways’ long-haul leisure network from Gatwick Airport, covering routes to destinations such as the Caribbean, Orlando and beyond. The move follows strong financial results from parent company International Airlines Group (IAG) and signals continued investment in BA’s Gatwick operation.
For travellers flying BA flights from Gatwick, this is a genuinely positive upgrade.
A lot of the Boeing 777 aircraft currently used on these routes are showing their age, while the 787-10 Dreamliner promises a quieter cabin, more modern interiors, better fuel efficiency and a more comfortable overall experience.

Why Gatwick Still Matters to British Airways
Heathrow may be British Airways’ main hub, but Gatwick remains an important part of the airline’s network.
Most British Airways flights from Gatwick are focused on leisure routes, especially long-haul sunshine destinations and a smaller short-haul operation through BA Euroflyer.
If you’re not familiar with British Airways Euroflyer, it’s BA’s Gatwick-based subsidiary operating short-haul services from the airport. It uses British Airways branding and service standards, but with Gatwick-based crews and a lower-cost structure designed to make BA’s Gatwick operation more competitive.
I recently flew with British Airways from London Gatwick and if you want to see what that experience is actually like, you can read my full review here:

What the Boeing 787-10 Means for Gatwick Passengers
For passengers, the move from older 777s to Boeing 787-10 Dreamliners should be a real improvement.
The 787-10 typically offers:
quieter cabins
improved cabin pressure and humidity
larger windows
better fuel efficiency
more modern seating and interiors
These Gatwick aircraft are not expected to include First Class, unlike some Heathrow-based BA aircraft, but they should still be well suited to premium leisure demand, with Club World and World Traveller Plus continuing to be important on these routes. The Boeing 787-10 can carry around 330 passengers and is roughly 25% more fuel efficient than older aircraft like the 777-200.
For anyone flying to the Caribbean or Florida from Gatwick, this should mean a much more modern onboard experience later this decade.
Which Terminal Do BA Flights Use at Gatwick?
One of the most common questions travellers ask is simple:
Which terminal do British Airways use at Gatwick?
All British Airways flights from London Gatwick Airport (LGW) operate from South Terminal. That means BA passengers will find:
check-in desks in South Terminal
security and Fast Track in South Terminal
most of the airline’s short-haul and long-haul departure facilities in the same terminal
If you're driving to Gatwick, it’s also worth planning parking in advance as South Terminal can get very busy during peak travel periods.
And if you're heading into the city after landing, I’ve also explained the fastest ways to reach central London from Gatwick, including train, bus and taxi options.
If you're planning a trip soon, I’ve already put reviewed Club Europe covering British Airways Business Class experience.

British Airways Lounge at Gatwick
If you’re flying Club Europe, Club World, or hold eligible British Airways Executive Club status, you’ll usually have access to the British Airways Galleries Lounge at Gatwick South Terminal.
I recently visited it before flying from Gatwick and reviewed the full experience, including the food, seating, atmosphere and whether it’s actually worth using.
And if you don’t have airline lounge access, Gatwick still has several strong independent options.
I’ve reviewed them all here:
If you don’t have airline status, many travellers access Gatwick lounges using Priority Pass.

Flying Club Europe from Gatwick
If you’re travelling short-haul with British Airways from Gatwick, the premium cabin is Club Europe.
That usually includes:
lounge access
priority boarding
a blocked middle seat
complimentary food and drinks
a slightly smoother airport experience overall
I recently tested the full Club Europe from Gatwick experience, including check-in, lounge access and the onboard product.

Can You Use Avios on BA Flights from Gatwick?
Yes and in some cases, BA flights from Gatwick can be a very good use of Avios points.
British Airways’ Gatwick routes are especially interesting if you’re looking at:
Caribbean redemptions
premium leisure routes
companion voucher bookings
upgrade voucher opportunities
In some cases, reward availability on Gatwick routes can actually be better than Heathrow, especially on leisure-heavy long-haul destinations.
If you’re new to the loyalty side of things, I explain how it all works in my full guide here:
Don’t Forget BA's Baggage Rules
If you’re flying British Airways from Gatwick, it’s also worth checking the baggage rules before departure.
BA baggage allowances vary depending on:
cabin class
fare type
route
Executive Club status
And if you’re used to flying low-cost airlines, BA baggage can feel more generous, but it still pays to know exactly what’s included.
Driving to Gatwick? Don’t Forget Parking
If you’re driving to the airport for your BA flight, pre-booking parking is usually one of the easiest ways to save money.
Walk-up prices can be painful, especially during peak travel periods.
I’ve compared the main options and explained how to save up to 70% on Gatwick airport parking here:
Long-Haul Destinations British Airways Fly From Gatwick
British Airways operates a number of long-haul leisure routes from London Gatwick, mainly to holiday destinations in the Caribbean and the United States.
Popular BA flights from Gatwick include routes to:
Orlando
Cancun
Punta Cana
Barbados
Antigua
St Lucia
Grenada
Tampa
Aruba
Mauritius
Accra
These are the kind of routes where Gatwick really matters to BA. They’re designed around premium leisure demand, family travel and winter sun bookings, which is exactly why updated aircraft make a difference.
If you’re heading to Aruba, I’ve also written more on that here:

If you're planning to use points, Gatwick’s long-haul leisure routes can sometimes offer better Avios reward availability than Heathrow.

Why This Matters for the Future of BA at Gatwick
This fleet change is about more than just newer aircraft.
It’s a sign that British Airways still sees Gatwick as an important part of its future, particularly for:
long-haul leisure flying
premium holiday demand
Caribbean and Florida routes
travellers looking for an alternative to Heathrow
For years, Gatwick has often felt like Heathrow’s more relaxed cousin. But with new aircraft and continued investment, BA is clearly not done with the airport.
That’s good news for passengers.
Final Boarding Call
Gatwick may not be British Airways’ main global hub, but it remains a very important airport for the airline’s leisure network.
And with Boeing 787-10 Dreamliners set to replace older 777s, passengers flying BA flights from Gatwick should see a noticeably more modern experience in the years ahead.
If you’re flying soon, it’s also worth checking:
which terminal BA uses at Gatwick
Gatwick airport parking options
British Airways baggage rules
your lounge options
whether Avios can get you there for less
Because the best trips usually start long before boarding.
