Plane Avios Tip of the Week
If you’re collecting British Airways Avios and flying through duty free Heathrow, this is one of the easiest “stacking” tricks most travellers completely miss. British Airways quietly partnered with Club Avolta in late 2025, and most travellers still don’t realise it exists.
Club Avolta (formerly Dufry / Red by Dufry) is the loyalty programme behind World Duty Free and it now partners with British Airways and Iberia to let you earn and redeem Avios when shopping airside.
It’s passive earning… on spending you were probably doing anyway.

How Avios Earning Works at Duty Free
Here’s the core mechanic:
Earn 1 Avios per £1/€1 spent
Works in-store and via Reserve & Collect
Available at participating World Duty Free / Dufry locations (including Heathrow & Spain)
Earn up to 3,000 Avios per transaction. Capped at 3,000 Avios per transaction (so very high-spend shopping trips max out).
You’ll also receive a 250 Avios bonus when you first link your accounts and make a qualifying purchase.
Not life-changing, but a nice incremental boost, especially before long-haul trips.
Can You Redeem Avios Too?
Yes, but with limits.
You can convert Avios into shopping vouchers to spend in duty free stores:
Max 5 vouchers per 30 days
Up to £250/€250 total value
It’s not the best redemption value compared to flights, but useful if you’re Avios-rich and cash-poor before departure. In most cases, redeeming Avios for flights gives far better value per point. I’d treat duty free redemptions as a fallback, not a strategy.
Instant Discounts with Club Avolta
This is where the programme gets more interesting.
Just by joining the Club Avolta app, you unlock automatic savings:
Silver: ~5% off
Gold: ~7% off
Platinum: ~10% off
Reserve & Collect promotions can push discounts up to 20% off selected items.
There are also occasional status match offers, meaning airline or hotel elite members can jump tiers instantly.
How to Set It Up
Takes two minutes:
1️⃣ Download the Club Avolta app
2️⃣ Link your British Airways Avios account
3️⃣ Scan your QR code at checkout
4️⃣ Or shop via Reserve & Collect for bigger discounts
Savings + Avios apply instantly.
Plane Honest: Is It Worth It?
On its own, this won’t fund a Business Class redemption.
But as part of a wider Avios strategy, it’s smart stacking:
Duty free spend → Avios earned
Instant % discount → cash saved
Combine with BA Amex → double dip, Pay with a BA Amex → earn Avios on the card + earn Avios via Club Avolta.
Small wins add up, especially across multiple trips.
Finding Seats Still Matters More
As always, collecting Avios is the easy part.
Spending them well is where the real value sits.
That’s why I always recommend using a reward search tool alongside your points strategy.
Reward Flight Finder tracks British Airways reward seat availability automatically, alerts you when seats appear, and shows peak vs off-peak pricing instantly.
👉 Try Reward Flight Finder freeYou can start with the 7-day free trial (no commitment, cancel anytime).

Reward Flight Finder: How You Actually Use Your Avios Collecting Avios is the easy part…
Right now you earn Avios easily. The hard part is actually finding the reward seats when you want to travel and that’s where most people give up.
That’s exactly why I use Reward Flight Finder.
It does the work that British Airways doesn’t:
✅ Automatically scans BA reward availability
✅ Sends you instant alerts when seats appear
✅ Shows peak vs off-peak pricing clearly
✅ Finds seats months before most people even look
You can start with the 7-day free trial, and if it works for you (No commitment, cancel anytime)
