Global Airlines Takes Flight: Glasgow to JFK on the A380

By Flight and Travel Expert Mr Plane Guy

The skies over Scotland witnessed something truly remarkable on May 15, 2025, as Global Airlines made its debut transatlantic flight from Glasgow to New York JFK. For aviation enthusiasts and frequent flyers alike, this was no ordinary takeoff. It was the moment a bold new player in the airline industry took its first leap towards the big leagues.

A Bold Move or a Game Changer?

Global Airlines, founded by former banker James Asquith, is not just any start-up. It’s a British carrier that has chosen to break into the competitive transatlantic market with the world’s largest passenger aircraft: the iconic Airbus A380. While many airlines have retired the A380, citing high fuel costs and maintenance challenges, Global Airlines is betting on luxury, comfort, and a touch of nostalgia to set itself apart.

First Flight Details

At 11:33 local time, the Airbus A380, registered as 9H-GLOBL and branded in Global Airlines’ signature colors, soared out of Glasgow Airport (GLA) en route to JFK. Operated under flight number 3L380, this landmark journey marked the first direct flight from Glasgow to New York offered by a British airline. Passengers on board enjoyed not just the thrill of a maiden voyage but also a level of spacious comfort that only the A380 can deliver.

The return flight is scheduled for May 19, after which the next leg will depart from Manchester (MAN) to JFK on May 21, operating as flight HFM810, with the final return from New York to Manchester on May 25 as flight HFM811.

Making It Happen: Hi Fly and the Charter Model

Interestingly, Global Airlines is not yet a fully certified carrier and is relying on Hi Fly Malta to operate these chartered flights. This approach allows the airline to test the waters without fully committing to the immense costs associated with running an A380, but also explains why the airlines isn't as yet selling there own flights or officially operating these flight until it get its own AOC but still they have take to the skies in full livery what an amazing achievement!

The Onboard Experience

One of the standout features of this debut flight was the onboard ‘Sky Pub’a unique social space where passengers could mingle while cruising at 43,000 feet. Founder James Asquith himself took to Instagram, sharing a photo of the pub with the caption, “See you at the Sky Pub at 43,000 feet.” It’s touches like this that could make Global Airlines a memorable choice for those seeking more than just a seat to their destination.

Global Airlines Takes Flight: Glasgow to JFK on the A380

Global Airlines has made a splash with this inaugural flight, but the big question remains: will they be able to sustain regular service across the Atlantic? For now, the excitement is palpable, and as a travel enthusiast, I can’t help but root for them. Time will tell if this gamble pays off, but for now, it’s safe to say that Global Airlines has officially taken flight.
