As Saudi Arabia continues its ambitious Vision 2030 plan to diversify its economy and boost tourism, the launch of Riyadh Air marks a significant milestone in the Kingdom's aviation sector. Officially unveiled on March 12, 2023, by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Riyadh Air aims to redefine air travel with a blend of modernity and traditional Saudi hospitality.
The Vision Behind Riyadh Air
Riyadh Air is a state-funded sister airline to Saudia, owned by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF). The airline's inception aligns with PIF's strategy to diversify the nation's economy and enhance its aviation sector, contributing to the broader objectives of Vision 2030. With Tony Douglas, former CEO of Etihad Airways, at the helm, Riyadh Air is poised to become a formidable player in the global aviation industry.

Fleet and Technological Innovations
Riyadh Air plans to operate a modern fleet of 132 aircraft, featuring cutting-edge technology and premium cabins designed to connect passengers to over 100 global destinations by 2030. The airline has confirmed an order for 39 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, with options for an additional 33. These aircraft are known for their fuel efficiency and passenger comfort, boasting features like larger windows and reduced noise levels.
WOW
In line with its commitment to sustainability, Riyadh Air is also considering the acquisition of Airbus A321 neo aircraft, which offer significant reductions in fuel burn and CO2 emissions. The airline's focus on environmentally friendly materials and the use of electric buses for staff transportation underscores its dedication to sustainable operations.
Destinations and Routes
While the full list of destinations is yet to be announced, Riyadh Air aims to connect travellers to over 100 destinations worldwide by 2030. The airline plans to commence operations with flights to major Western European capitals, with London Heathrow being a priority.

Onboard Experience: What to Expect
Riyadh Air is positioning itself as a premium airline, offering exceptional service across all classes. Business class cabins will feature sliding doors for enhanced privacy, while premium economy seats are designed to provide a business-class-like experience without fully lie-flat seats. Economy passengers can look forward to 13.3-inch screens and USB-C charging ports.
In adherence to Saudi Arabia's strict alcohol laws, Riyadh Air will not serve alcohol on board.
Booking and Loyalty Programs
Riyadh Air aims to simplify travel planning by allowing passengers to book flights, activities, and more in a single step, saving time and enhancing the overall travel experience.
While specific details about the loyalty program are yet to be unveiled, CEO Tony Douglas has indicated that the airline will offer a frequent flyer program with conventional features, allowing passengers to earn and redeem miles, along with personalized rewards catering to past preferences.
Strategic Partnerships: Expanding Connectivity
In September 2024, Virgin Atlantic and Riyadh Air signed a Strategic Cooperation Memorandum of Understanding to enhance connectivity between London, Saudi Arabia, and beyond. This partnership aims to provide customers with a range of benefits, including expanded networks and improved customer experiences.

Priority Pass Lounges at Riyadh Airport
For travellers seeking comfort and convenience at Riyadh's King Khalid International Airport, several lounges are accessible through Priority Pass, including the Plaza Premium Lounge in Terminal 1. These lounges offer amenities such as comfortable seating, refreshments, and Wi-Fi, providing a relaxing environment before your flight.
