Where I’ve Stayed in New York

Over the years, I’ve stayed all over New York – from Midtown skyscrapers and Brooklyn boutique hotels to convenient stopovers in New Jersey and even out on Long Island. Each neighbourhood has its own rhythm, and I’ve learned that a Plane Luxury Escape in NYC doesn’t have to mean five-star prices – you just need to know where to look.

Whether you’re crossing the Atlantic with Virgin Atlantic Premium Economy or upgrading to Virgin Atlantic Upper Class, flying JetBlue to New York, or saving big with Norse Atlantic Economy or Norse Atlantic Premium, there’s a stay to match every flight and every budget.

And if you’re connecting through JFK or have a long layover, don’t miss the TWA Hotel at JFK – pure retro glamour, runway views, and a rooftop pool straight out of the golden age of flying.

From skyline suites to hidden neighbourhood gems, these are the areas and hotels I’d choose again in a heartbeat for a true Luxury-for-Less experience in New York.

Mr Plane Guy Picks

  • First visit: Arlo NoMad

  • Best value: Hampton by Hilton Central Brooklyn

  • Airport hotel: TWA Hotel JFK

  • Best views: The Standard High Line

Best Areas to Stay in New York City

Best Areas to Stay in New York City

Midtown Manhattan: Central, Iconic & Surprisingly Affordable

Midtown is classic New York – skyscrapers, shopping, Broadway, and that electric energy that makes the city hum. It’s perfect for first-timers who want to be close to everything yet still within reach of Central Park and the Empire State Building.

Plane Tip: I’m all for luxury for less and in New York, that means skipping individual tickets. The Go City Explorer Pass bundles 100+ attractions into one smart app. Think Empire State views, ferry rides, museums, and even The Edge, for roughly half the usual cost. Big-city fun, small-city prices.

Where to stay in Manhattan: Arlo Nomad – I stayed here recently and loved it. “NoMad” stands for North of Madison Square Park, and it’s brilliantly located. Rooms are compact but beautifully designed with floor-to-ceiling windows.Top tip: Book a City View Queen – the skyline views are worth every extra dollar.

However I found it to be cheaper on Lastmiute.com.

Soho & Lower Manhattan: Design, Boutiques & Downtown Energy

Soho oozes effortless cool – cobbled streets, designer stores, and brunch spots you’ll want to photograph before you eat.

Where to stay in Manhattan:

  • citizenM Bowery – design-led, high-tech, with a rooftop bar and city views.

  • NOMO Soho – ivy-covered entrance and hidden-garden restaurant.

Stay here for that Plane Luxury Escape blend of style and culture.

Meatpacking District & Chelsea: Trendy Hotels & Rooftop Views

If your New York plans include cocktails and culture, this area delivers both. The High Line, Chelsea Market, and Whitney Museum are steps away, and the nightlife is unmatched.

Where to stay:

  • The Standard High Line – glass-walled rooms and rooftop sunsets.

  • Dream Downtown – playful, bold, and social.

Watch for Lastminute.com sales – you’ll often snag surprisingly good rates.

Brooklyn: Affordable Luxury & Local Vibes

Across the river lies a calmer, often better-value New York. Brooklyn’s creative energy and skyline views make it one of my favourite bases.

I once stayed at the Hampton by Hilton Central Brooklyn, just two minutes from the subway – clean rooms, breakfast included, and far gentler on the wallet than Midtown.

Neighbourhoods like Williamsburg, DUMBO, and Downtown Brooklyn offer character, convenience, and rooftop views for half the price.

New Jersey & Long Island: Smart Alternatives for Luxury-for-Less

If Manhattan prices stretch the budget, look just beyond the river.

New Jersey (especially Jersey City and Hoboken) gives you skyline views of Manhattan and fast PATH-train access downtown. Long Island City and Queens are one quick subway ride from Times Square and often 30–40 % cheaper.

Perfect if you’re staying longer or travelling as a group.

Top Brunch Spots in New York

Skip the hotel breakfast. New York is a brunch city, and it’s worth leaving your room hungry.

  1. Balthazar (Soho) – French brasserie vibes and buttered croissants.

  2. Grand Central Café (Midtown) – pancakes beneath the terminal ceiling.

  3. Ess-a-Bagel (East Midtown) – legendary bagels piled with cream cheese.

  4. Time Out Market (Brooklyn) – food stalls with river views.

  5. Clinton St Baking Company (Lower East Side) – blueberry pancakes worth the queue.

Helicopter Rides in New York

If you want to see the city from a whole new angle, few experiences beat a New York helicopter ride. I’ve written a full guide here → NYC Helicopter Tours and Rides – but these are my top three picks:

  1. 15-Minute New York Helicopter Tour from Downtown Manhattan – quick, scenic, and perfect for first-timers.

  2. 20-Minute Deluxe Manhattan Helicopter Flight – extends up to Yankee Stadium and the bridges.

  3. Night Helicopter Tour Over Manhattan and Brooklyn – city lights, skyline sparkle, and guaranteed goosebumps.

These experiences regularly trend in searches for “helicopter ride New York”, “New York helicopter tour”, and “helicopter flights NYC”, so if you’re building an itinerary, book early.
