Zanzibar might feel like a far-flung Indian Ocean paradise, but reaching the island is easier than many travellers think.

Almost every international trip to the island passes through Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ), the main airport serving Zanzibar and the gateway to its famous beaches and historic Stone Town.

Every international journey begins at Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ), the main gateway connecting the island to Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

If you're planning a trip to Zanzibar, this guide brings together everything you need to know, including:

  • flights to Zanzibar

  • direct flights to Zanzibar from Europe

  • what to expect at Zanzibar Airport

  • hotels and luxury-for-less stays

  • unforgettable experiences across the island

This is your Plane Honest guide to flying to Zanzibar and planning the perfect island escape.

Zanzibar Airport Quick Facts

Airport: Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ)

Location: Zanzibar City, Tanzania

Distance to Stone Town: 6 km

Typical flight time from Europe: 8–10 hours

Where Is Zanzibar Airport?

The island’s main airport is Abeid Amani Karume International Airport, located just outside Zanzibar City, around 6 km from historic Stone Town.

The airport has a newer international terminal that handles long-haul flights arriving from Europe and the Middle East.

After landing, most travellers reach their hotel within 15–30 minutes by taxi or hotel transfer.

How to Get to Zanzibar: A Zanzibar Travel Guide

Flights to Zanzibar

Flying is the fastest and most convenient way to reach Zanzibar.

While some charter services occasionally operate direct flights from the UK, most travellers reach the island with Doha, Dubai, Istanbul and Amsterdam being the most common connection points.

Popular routes include:

  • Qatar Airways via Doha

  • Emirates via Dubai

  • Turkish Airlines via Istanbul

  • KLM via Amsterdam

Most journeys from the UK take 10–13 hours depending on the connection.

TUI fly Netherlands

Direct Flights to Zanzibar from Europe

There are also several direct routes from Europe to Zanzibar.

  • TUI fly Netherlands operates direct flights from Amsterdam Schiphol Airport to Zanzibar.

  • Neos Air operates direct flights from Milan Malpensa Airport to Zanzibar.

These flights typically take around 8–10 hours depending on the departure city.

What to Expect at Zanzibar Airport

Abeid Amani Karume International Airport is not a huge airport, but the international terminal is modern and functional.

Travellers can expect:

  • currency exchange counters

  • basic cafés and duty-free shops

  • taxi services outside the terminal

Most beach resorts arrange private transfers, which is usually the easiest way to reach your hotel.

⚠️ Zanzibar Travel Insurance - Required for all foreign travelers arriving in Zanzibar.

Zanzibar Mandatory Travel Insurance (Important Entry Requirement)

One thing many travellers don’t realise before flying to Zanzibar is that visitors are required to purchase mandatory Zanzibar travel insurance.

This is one of the most important things to sort before flying, as some airlines may ask to see proof before boarding.

This policy is separate from your own personal travel insurance and is issued through the official Zanzibar government portal.

At the time of writing, the cost is: USD $44 per adult

After completing the purchase you will receive a QR code confirmation.

Although some travellers report that it can be purchased on arrival, many airlines now check that passengers have completed the insurance requirement before boarding.

When I flew to Zanzibar with Qatar Airways, airline staff carefully checked that passengers had the insurance confirmation before allowing them to travel.

For a smoother arrival experience, it’s usually best to complete the insurance online before departure.

Note: Entry requirements can change, so always check the latest official guidance before travelling.

How to Get from Zanzibar Airport to Stone Town or Your Hotel

Once you land at Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ), getting to your hotel is usually quick and straightforward. The airport is only around 6 km from Stone Town, and most journeys take 15–30 minutes depending on traffic and your destination.

Here are the main options travellers use when arriving in Zanzibar:

🚕 Taxi from Zanzibar Airport

Taxis are readily available outside the arrivals terminal. Most hotels and beaches across the island can be reached easily by taxi.

Typical prices:

  • Stone Town: around $10–$15

  • Nungwi / Kendwa: around $40–$60

  • Paje / Jambiani: around $35–$50

Drivers usually quote a price before departure, and fares are normally negotiated rather than metered.

Plane Tip: Always agree the price before getting into the taxi to avoid surprises when you arrive.

Private Airport Transfers

Many travellers prefer to book a private transfer in advance, especially if arriving late at night or travelling directly to beach resorts in the north or east of the island.

Benefits include:

  • fixed prices

  • driver waiting at arrivals

  • air-conditioned vehicles

  • no negotiation required

Most resorts and hotels can arrange this for you, or you can book a transfer online before you travel.

Some travellers prefer booking a transfer in advance through sites like GetYourGuide, which provide fixed prices and English-speaking drivers.

Hotel Pickup

Many Zanzibar resorts offer complimentary or paid airport pickup as part of their booking package.

This is often the easiest option, particularly if you're heading to:

  • Nungwi

  • Kendwa

  • Matemwe

  • Paje

  • Jambiani

Your driver will normally meet you in the arrivals hall holding a sign with your name.

Typical Travel Times from Zanzibar Airport

  • Stone Town: 10–15 minutes

  • Nungwi / Kendwa: 60–75 minutes

  • Paje / Jambiani: 50–60 minutes

  • Matemwe: around 1 hour

Zanzibar is a relatively small island, but the roads can be slow, so allow extra time during busy periods.
