This Week’s Flight Plan

Welcome back to Plane News Weekly, with more useful offers, practical points tips and ideas for getting a better trip for your money.

This week:

  • £300 back on £700 of qualifying United Airlines spending for targeted Amex cardholders.

  • £200 back on £2,000 with Air France, also targeted.

  • Hilton’s up-to-50,000-point debit card offer, with instant Gold status.

  • My verdict on Manchester’s new Aspire lounge.

  • British Airways’ Heathrow makeover, including a rather ambitious bar.

  • Al Maha lounge options appearing on Priority Pass in Doha.

  • Avios Tip of the Week: 80 Avios per £1 With NordVPN

A Quick Update From Behind the Boarding Pass

A few editions have gone missing from the departure board. Between Türkiye, my partner being in and out of hospital, and juggling my nine-to-five with my five-to-nine, it has felt rather more like a twenty-four-seven. Thank you for sticking around.

I want Plane News Weekly to become something you open because it helps: a saving you can use, an airport mistake you can avoid, or a little inspiration for the next trip.

There will still be lounge gossip. I have standards and occasionally an espresso martini.

nhow London Review

Is nhow London the Hotel You Won’t Want to Leave?

Airport lounges haven’t been my only research assignment. I also stayed at nhow London, near Old Street, where the design has considerably more personality than your average beige hotel room.

My stay was gifted, and I received a corner-suite upgrade. But there’s more to a hotel than a photogenic bedroom, so I’ve covered the location, breakfast and what to expect in my Plane Honest review.

Last Call: £300 Back With United Airlines

Last Call: £300 Back With United Airlines and American Express Gold Card

Check your American Express app before booking your next flight.

A targeted offer gives eligible UK cardholders £300 back after £700 or more of qualifying online spending with United Airlines, with a booking deadline of 23 October 2026.

That is this Friday!

The reported offer requires a journey departing from the UK. It is not a blanket discount available to everyone: you need to find it on your account, save it and meet its booking and payment conditions.

What Does That Saving Actually Look Like?

If an eligible booking costs £700, a £300 statement credit brings the effective cost to £400.

That is approximately 43% back at the minimum spending threshold.

This is an offer to check on a card you already hold not a reason to assume a new card application will give you access, but on that note, check out this.......

My Amex Gold Referral: 45,000 Bonus Points

If you were already considering American Express Gold, my referral link currently offers eligible new Cardmembers 45,000 Membership Rewards® bonus points when you spend £3,000 in your first three months.

Apply through the link by 3 November 2026. The annual fee is waived for the first year; an annual fee applies afterwards. Check the current fee, eligibility and full terms on the application page.

Disclosure: I may receive bonus points if you apply through my referral link and are approved. Whoop whoop!

18+. Subject to status and approval. Welcome-bonus eligibility and spending conditions apply.

Air France: Another £200 Worth Checking For

Plane NEWS: Some UK American Express cardholders are also being targeted with £200 back on £2,000 of qualifying Air France flight spending.

Some UK American Express cardholders are also being targeted with £200 back on £2,000 of qualifying Air France flight spending.

The reported booking deadline is 4 November 2026, but check the precise dates and payment requirements in your account.

At exactly £2,000, that is a 10% saving after the statement credit.

It could be useful for a couple booking a long-haul trip or someone comparing a premium cabin. But the same rule applies: compare the final fare, routing, baggage and conditions before declaring victory.

Plane Honest: £200 back is lovely. An unnecessary connection or a substantially more expensive fare can make it less lovely very quickly.

Hilton’s 50,000-Point Offer Is Back. Hello, Gold!

Plane News Weekly: Hilton Honors Plus Debit Card

The Hilton Honors Plus Debit Card welcome promotion has returned, combining up to 50,000 bonus points with instant Hilton Honors Gold status on activation.

The card costs £150 a year, so let’s put the fee beside the headline rather than hide it behind a picture of a swimming pool.

The current welcome offer gives eligible new customers:

  • 10,000 points after a first qualifying purchase of £1 or more.

  • Another 40,000 points and 10 bonus Elite Qualifying Nights after £2,500 of eligible foreign-currency spending within six months.

The promotion ends on 14 December 2026. Eligibility restrictions apply, including for people who have held either Hilton debit card in the previous 12 months.

What Does “Up to 40 Qualifying Nights” Mean?

The regular Plus card benefit allows you to earn five Elite Qualifying Nights per £5,000 of eligible spending, up to 30 per calendar year.

The welcome promotion adds another 10, once its requirements are met. Those additional nights are promotional, rather than a permanent annual increase. They help with status qualification; they are not free hotel-night vouchers.

Foreign-currency purchases also carry a 0.5% fee above the Currensea Realtime Rate. This is not a fee-free overseas spending card.

My own satisfying redemption was an airport hotel: 40,000 Hilton points for a night at Hilton Garden Inn Heathrow, saving almost £200 on that particular stay.

That is the kind of luxury for less I appreciate. Less motorway at an ungodly hour. More sleep.

Manchester’s New Aspire Lounge: A Slightly Surreal Arrival

Manchester’s New Aspire Lounge

Aspire invited me to try its new lounge at Manchester Airport Terminal 2’s D Gates, and something rather lovely happened.

I walked in and was recognised straight away as Mr Plane Guy.

A small moment, perhaps, but when you spend so much time filming, writing and wondering whether anyone has noticed, it means something. Naturally, I am now wondering whether I can still pop to the garage for a pint of milk. Cheryl, I understand.

But Is the Lounge Any Good?

On my visit, the new D Gates lounge impressed me with its food, staff, cleanliness and Manchester personality.

There are two Aspire lounges in Terminal 2, so make sure you are looking at the right one. The new D Gates lounge does not have runway views.

It also did not provide the complimentary espresso martini of my dreams. Somehow, I carried on.

My visit was gifted, but the useful question remains whether it is worth your money or lounge visit allowance.

British Airways Is Raising the Bar at Heathrow

British Airways Is Raising the Bar at Heathrow

New cabin plans, lounge investment and now a 17-metre bar. British Airways appears to have located the renovation budget, and I am here for it.

The planned new lounge at Heathrow Terminal 5 C Gates will include airfield views, dining and work spaces, showers and a dedicated Concorde area for First passengers.

Before you rearrange next month’s flight: the T5C lounge is scheduled for the end of 2028.

The Terminal 5 Arrivals lounge redevelopment is expected to open by the end of 2027, while a new BA and American Airlines First check-in experience at Terminal 3 is planned for winter 2026–27.

Having recently visited Galleries Club South, I am particularly interested in what the wider Heathrow investment will deliver.

A dramatic bar is welcome. Comfortable seats, good food and a pleasant experience when the lounge is busy will matter more.

Heathrow T5: Club Aspire Is Closing for Its Makeover

Review: Club Aspire, Heathrow Terminal 5 Is It Worth Paying for Access?

A more immediate date for your diary: Club Aspire at Heathrow Terminal 5 is scheduled to operate through 15 November 2026, before closing for refurbishment from 16 November.

The space is due to return as a No1 Lounge in 2027. The current refurbishment listing runs until 30 April 2027, but an exact reopening date has not been confirmed.

What this means for you: if your journey falls during the closure, check alternative lounge arrangements before travelling. An old review or saved airport routine won’t tell you whether the doors will be open.

Doha Connections: Check Your Priority Pass App Again

Al Maha Lounge Review: A Late-Night Arabic Oasis in the Bustle of Doha Airport

There is useful news for travellers connecting at Doha’s Hamad International Airport.

Al Maha Lounge listings are appearing on Priority Pass, including North/Orchard and South Node.

Search for Doha in your own app before travelling and check the lounge location, access conditions, guest charges and any restrictions.

My Al Maha visit was certainly memorable. If you picture Doha lounge life as a guaranteed oasis of silence, my experience involved rather more people and a search for somewhere to sit.

Avios Tip of the Week: 80 Avios per £1 With NordVPN

Avios tip of the week

A VPN subscription with a rather generous side of Avios? Now you have my attention.

NordVPN is currently showing 80 Avios per £1 of eligible spending through the Avios shopping portal. At that rate, £100 of qualifying spending would earn 8,000 Avios. Check which purchases qualify and how eligible spending is calculated before buying.

I’ve been using NordVPN since my trip to China last year. Now I’m living in the Netherlands, I’ve also used it to watch UK television. It has worked well for me.

Make Sure Your Avios Track

Start by signing into the Avios shopping portal, finding NordVPN and checking the current rate and retailer conditions. Click through from there, rather than buying directly or using a separate affiliate link.

Then:

  • Accept cookies on the retailer’s website.

  • Start with an empty basket and complete the purchase in one session.

  • Avoid gift vouchers, referral schemes and discount codes, as instructed by the offer.

  • Disable ad-blockers and competing cashback, coupon or rewards extensions.

Save a screenshot of the offer and your order confirmation.

👉 Log in to your Avios shopping portal and search for NordVPN.

Rate checked for this edition on 18 October 2026. Rates, eligibility and retailer terms can change.
