I Got This Heathrow Hotel for Free... and I'd Happily Pay for It

If you're looking for a Heathrow airport hotel, most travellers fall into one of two camps.
You either want:
The cheapest room possible before an early flight.
Or...
Something comfortable enough that your holiday starts the night before.
The Hilton Garden Inn Heathrow Airport sits somewhere nicely in the middle.
It's more polished than a budget airport hotel.
More affordable than many of Heathrow's premium options and thanks to Hatton Cross Underground Station being just a few minutes' walk away, it's one of the easiest Heathrow hotels to reach without paying ridiculous airport transfer costs.
Even better?
I didn't pay a penny.
My stay was booked entirely using 40,000 Hilton Honors points earned through everyday spending, bonuses and my Hilton Honors Debit Card. This might be one of the best Heathrow hotel redemptions I've made.
Hilton Garden Inn Heathrow Location: One of Heathrow's Best Connected Hotels
The Hilton Garden Inn Heathrow Airport is located on Eastern Perimeter Road, close to Hatton Cross Underground Station. The walk takes around five minutes.
That means easy access to:
Heathrow Terminal 2
Heathrow Terminal 3
Central London via the Piccadilly Line
For many travellers, you don't even need a taxi. You don't even need a shuttle bus.
Just jump on the Tube. It's one of the reasons this hotel consistently appears when people search for hotels near Heathrow Airport.
What About Terminal 5?
Terminal 5 is slightly less convenient. The Hotel Hoppa service operates between the hotel and Terminal 5. Journey time: approximately 22 minutes.
Cost: around £7.95 each way. Not cheap, but unfortunately that's fairly standard for Heathrow these days.
Hilton Garden Inn vs Hampton by Hilton: What's the Difference?
Many travellers see "Hilton" and assume all the brands are the same.
They're not.
Think of Hampton by Hilton as:
Reliable
Functional
Complimentary breakfast
Focused on value
Hilton Garden Inn sits slightly higher up the ladder.
You get:
Full-service restaurant
Proper hotel bar
More stylish public spaces
Hotel shop, ( although £3.39 for a can of coke! £26 for a bottle of wine!)
Larger rooms
Better food and beverage offering
More business-friendly facilities
I'd compare it to:
Courtyard by Marriott
Hyatt Place
Moxy's more sophisticated cousin
It's still focused-service hospitality, just with a little more polish.
Don’t Spend £30 in Pret and Still Have Nowhere to Sit
If you’re staying at an airport hotel like this before flying from Heathrow, this is the bit most people overlook.
You’ve sorted the hotel. You’ve made the morning easier, but once you’re through security at the airport, it’s a different story.
£7 coffee.
£15 breakfast at Pret or Wetherspoons.
Nowhere to sit.
You end up spending £20–£40 without even thinking about it and you’re still stuck in a busy Heathrow departure area.
London's Heathrow actually has some genuinely good lounges, and they’re not all business class only.
If you don’t want to pay every time, that’s where Priority Pass can work well, it gives you access to multiple lounges at a reduced cost, regardless of airline or ticket.
If you travel even a few times a year, this is where it really starts to make sense.
Check-In: Old School Wins
One thing Hilton does extremely well is technology. I could have checked in remotely.
Activated my Digital Key. Gone straight to my room. But after a very long day, I decided to do things the old-fashioned way. I'm glad I did. The receptionist was genuinely lovely.
She thanked me for my loyalty. Handed me two complimentary cans of water.
And upgraded my room. Check-in was quick, friendly and exactly what you'd hope for from a Hilton property.
Was It Really an Upgrade?
Officially, yes. I was moved into a: Queen Room with Sofa.
Now let's be honest. Adding a sofa doesn't exactly turn economy into First Class.
It's one of those upgrades that feels slightly more impressive on paper than in reality.
But here's the thing. The room was excellent and that's what matters. Perhaps next time it will be another upgrade, a room with a lamp?
Hilton Garden Inn Heathrow The Room: Exactly What You Want Before a Flight
The room immediately felt a step above your average airport hotel.
Everything was spotless. The bathroom was modern. The furnishings felt quality.
And the bed? Huge, exactly what you want before an early departure.
The room included:
Refrigerator
Iron and ironing board
Hairdryer
Suitcase stand
Coffee machine
Work desk
Plenty of charging points
Nothing flashy. Just everything you actually need.
It's the sort of room where you unpack, relax and immediately feel ready for your trip.
The Most Important Question: Did I Sleep Well?
Airport hotel reviews should answer one thing: Can I actually sleep?
Unfortunately I had to be up at 0400, it seemed like a good idea to book the first flight to Newcastle, it was probably £2 cheaper.The bed was very big but very firm, it was lovely and cool. I didn't hear any aircraft noise.
The Holiday Starts Here
Some airport hotels feel like a necessity. Others feel like part of the holiday.
The Hilton Garden Inn Heathrow Airport definitely falls into the second category.
The lobby is modern and airy. There's a surprisingly impressive fitness centre.
And for reasons I'm still trying to understand, a shuffleboard table in reception.
Weird? Yes. Fun? Also yes.
The overall vibe reminded me a little of Moxy. Just slightly less cool. And slightly more grown-up.
A hotel aimed at both business travellers and leisure travellers.
Or as the travel industry insists on calling them these days..."Bleisure" travellers.
Who Should Stay Here?
Perfect for:
Early morning departures
Hilton Honors members
Tube users
Terminal 2 and 3 passengers
Business travellers
Less ideal for:
Terminal 5 passengers
Families wanting a resort feel
Google loves this sort of section.
Jack's Restaurant & Bar
With the football on and the Club World Cup in full swing, the bar was busy during my visit.
Very busy.
In fact, you could probably hear the commentary from every Heathrow terminal.
It was loud. Really loud.
But there was a good atmosphere. I opted for the chicken burger and settled in to watch the football. The food was OK.
The service was friendly and the bar felt like somewhere you'd happily spend an evening.
Not just somewhere to kill time before bed.
Breakfast: One Small Problem
There's really only one issue. Breakfast starts at:06:00
For many travellers, that's perfectly fine. For airport travellers? Not always.
My flight departed at 07:30. Which meant I needed to leave around 05:30.
So unfortunately breakfast wasn't an option. For a Heathrow airport hotel, I'd love to see an earlier breakfast offering or grab-and-go option. It's not a dealbreaker. But it's worth knowing before you book.
Hilton Honors Redemption Value
One of the biggest reasons I booked this hotel was the value.

When room rates are high around Heathrow, redemptions like this can offer fantastic value.
If you're collecting Hilton Honors points, this is exactly the sort of stay where they can really pay off.

Even if you're not using points, there's another option worth considering.

The Hilton Garden Inn Heathrow Airport gets almost everything right. Excellent location, comfortable rooms, friendly service.... Strong Hilton Honors value and easy access to Heathrow via Hatton Cross Underground Station. Would I have preferred breakfast before my flight? Yes. Would I happily stay again? Without hesitation.
If you're looking for a Heathrow airport hotel that balances comfort, convenience and value, this is one of the strongest options I've tried.
