COMING SOON: My Pegasus Airlines trip

Welcome back to another edition of Plane News Weekly, your Sunday roundup of airline news, airport lounges, loyalty updates, travel deals and everything happening in the world of aviation.

Last week’s edition never quite made it out of my drafts, so I’ve rolled the biggest stories into this week instead.

I’ve also been busy working on a new video for a business travel company, putting some of my many years of airport and airline experience to good use.

And I’m now getting ready for my upcoming trip with Pegasus Airlines.

Expect flights, lounges, luggage, Turkey content, several overpriced airport coffees and probably a few meltdowns.

Right, onto this week’s news.

Boarding Announcements, Airline Updates & Loyalty News

Plane News Weekly: United Announces Its Biggest-Ever International Expansion

United Announces Its Biggest-Ever International Expansion

United Airlines has announced the largest international expansion in its history, adding 10 new international cities and three additional routes for 2027.

The route that immediately caught my attention is Newark to Ibiza, which will operate four times per week using United’s new Airbus A321XLR.

Other new destinations include Luxembourg, Toulouse, Marseille, Valencia, Ljubljana, Terceira, Olbia, Catania and Okinawa.

United’s new “Born to Explore” A321XLR will feature 20 Polaris suites with privacy doors, 12 Premium Plus seats, free Starlink Wi-Fi for MileagePlus members and even a self-service snack bar in Economy.

A single-aisle aircraft flying overnight across the Atlantic may not appeal to everyone, but it could open up many smaller destinations that cannot support a large widebody aircraft.

I’ve taken a much closer look at the new aircraft, all 10 destinations and why Newark to Ibiza could be such an important route.

easyJet Is Pulling Out of Leeds Bradford Airport

easyJet Is Pulling Out of Leeds Bradford Airport

easyJet has confirmed that it will stop operating from Leeds Bradford Airport from 5 January 2027, ending 16 years of flights from the Yorkshire airport.

Its remaining Leeds Bradford routes are Barcelona, Belfast International, Malaga, Palma de Mallorca and Paris. Some services will finish earlier, with easyJet withdrawing completely after 5 January 2027.

Passengers with bookings beyond the withdrawal date are being offered a free transfer to an alternative easyJet flight or a refund.

easyJet says it is concentrating its aircraft on routes with stronger demand.

Plane Honest: easyJet wasn’t running a huge operation from Leeds Bradford, but losing an airline completely is never brilliant for competition or fares.

Flying Blue’s Cheapest Reward Flights Are Losing Benefits

Plane News Weekly: Flying Blue’s Cheapest Reward Flights Are Losing Benefits

From 8 September 2026, Air France and KLM Flying Blue reward tickets will be divided into Light, Standard and Flex fares.

The cheapest Light rewards will not allow changes or refunds, while Economy and Premium Economy Light tickets will lose their checked baggage allowance.

Most controversially, Business Light reward tickets will no longer include airport lounge access.

In one example, a 60,000-mile Business Class reward becomes Business Light, while the comparable Standard fare, with lounge access costs 75,000 miles.

Plane Honest: a Business Class ticket without lounge access feels suspiciously like a low-cost fare wearing a little silk scarf.

JetBlue Opens Its New BlueHouse Lounge in Boston

Plane News Weekly: JetBlue Opens Its New BlueHouse Lounge in Boston

JetBlue has opened its second BlueHouse airport lounge, this time at Boston Logan Airport.

The new 12,000-square-foot lounge is located in Terminal C and includes quiet working areas, locally inspired food, New England craft beers and cocktails designed by a Boston drinks expert.

Complimentary access is available to eligible passengers, including Mosaic 4 members and customers departing on qualifying Mint or Mint Flex fares.

It’s another important step for JetBlue, which has historically offered an impressive onboard experience but very little at the airport.

I flew JetBlue across the Atlantic and was genuinely impressed, even in Economy. Free Wi-Fi, live television, excellent legroom and crew who actually addressed me by name.

Now I just need an excuse to fly through Boston and properly inspect the cocktails.

Emirates Opens Its New Manchester Airport Lounge

New Emirates Manchester Airport Lounge

Emirates has opened its new dedicated lounge at Manchester Airport Terminal 2, bringing the airline’s latest global lounge design to the airport.

The lounge is available to eligible First Class and Business Class passengers and qualifying Emirates Skywards members travelling on the airline’s three daily Airbus A380 flights from Manchester.

It is another major addition to the transformed Terminal 2 and considerably more glamorous than fighting for a seat beside the departure gate.

Not flying Emirates? I’ve been making my way through Manchester’s other lounges to help you decide which are actually worth paying for.

Plane Points Tip of the Week: BA Amex Welcome Bonuses Take Off

BA Amex Welcome Bonuses Take Off

Both British Airways American Express cards have increased their welcome offers for eligible new cardmembers.

The Premium Plus Card is offering up to 60,000 Avios after spending £6,000 within the first three months.

The free British Airways American Express Card is offering 10,000 Avios or up to 15,000 Avios through selected referral links. The offers are available until 6 October.

Plane Honest: The Premium Plus Card has a £300 annual fee and a substantial spending target, so it won’t be suitable for everyone. Never spend more than you usually would just to unlock a welcome bonus.

Also check the exact bonus shown on the application page, as public and referral offers can differ.

Plane Deal of the Week: Save Up to £400 With Virgin Atlantic Holidays

Plane Deal of the Week: Save Up to £400 With Virgin Atlantic Holidays

Virgin Atlantic Holidays has launched a very short flash sale, but you’ll need to be quick because it ends on Tuesday 1 September.

Use the code VAHSALE at checkout to save:

  • £50 when spending £1,000–£2,499

  • £100 when spending £2,500–£3,999

  • £150 when spending £4,000–£5,499

  • £200 when spending £5,500–£9,999

  • £400 when spending £10,000 or more

The discount applies to qualifying package holidays departing between 1 September 2026 and 31 March 2028.

There is also a reduced deposit of £75 per person on selected bookings, while Virgin Atlantic’s wider flight and holiday sale continues until 30 September.

Plane Honest: Don’t spend £10,000 purely to save £400. But if you were already planning a Virgin Atlantic holiday, it makes sense to use the code before it disappears.

Flight Cancelled or Delayed?

Flight Cancelled or Delayed?

If your flight is disrupted, the airline’s proposed alternative isn’t always the quickest or most sensible way to reach your destination.

Reroute renegotiates and rebooks your journey in real time. It is free to try, with a $24 plan for the particularly messy cases.

Coming Soon...

It has been a busy week behind the scenes.

I’m working on a new video for a business travel company, and I’ll shortly be heading to Turkey with Pegasus Airlines.

That means plenty of new flight, airport, luggage and destination content is on the way.

Make sure you’re subscribed because there’s plenty coming.

Plane Question of the Week

Would you fly overnight across the Atlantic on a single-aisle Airbus A321XLR?

Or would you still prefer a proper twin-aisle aircraft for a long-haul flight?

Let me know in the comments......

FINAL BOARDING CALL

United is opening routes that would once have seemed impossible.

JetBlue is investing in its airport experience, BA Amex is offering some sizeable welcome bonuses and Virgin Atlantic Holidays has launched a sale that ends almost as quickly as it arrived.

Meanwhile, I’m preparing for Pegasus Airlines and working on something new for the business travel world.

It’s been busy.

Until next Sunday...

Keep collecting points. Keep discovering airport lounges. Keep travelling smarter.
