United Airlines A321XLR Routes: Newark to Ibiza Leads Huge 2027 Expansion

United Airlines has announced the largest international expansion in its history and one route in particular shows why this is much more than another seasonal timetable update.
From 31 May 2027, United plans to fly nonstop from Newark Liberty International Airport to Ibiza four times per week using its new Airbus A321XLR.
New York to Ibiza on a long-haul, single-aisle aircraft would have sounded highly unlikely not long ago. Ibiza has traditionally been reached from the United States by connecting through hubs such as London, Madrid, Barcelona or another major European city. United’s A321XLR changes the calculation.
It gives the airline enough range to cross the Atlantic, but with fewer seats than a conventional widebody that can land at smaller airports. That means United can consider destinations where passenger demand may be valuable but not large enough to fill a Boeing 767, 777 or 787 every day.
For travellers, it means overlooked destinations such as Ibiza, Marseille, Luxembourg and Valencia can become nonstop possibilities. For the aviation industry, it could be a pivotal change in how airlines build long-haul networks.
Quick answer: Where will United fly its A321XLR?
United says its Airbus A321XLR will begin international service on 1 December 2026, initially flying from Washington Dulles to Amsterdam and Dublin.
During summer 2027, the aircraft is scheduled to serve five new destinations:

Newark to Ibiza is the route that changes the conversation
United’s wider announcement contains 10 new international cities, but Newark to Ibiza is the route that immediately made me stop scrolling.
Long-haul flights to Ibiza are exceptionally unusual. The island is famous worldwide, particularly among American travellers, yet its airport has largely been connected to short- and medium-haul European markets. Reaching it from the United States has normally required a connection.
United now believes a four-times-weekly nonstop service from Newark can work with the A321XLR. The aircraft is the crucial part of that decision: it gives the airline long-haul reach without forcing it to deploy the capacity of a large twin-aisle jet.
That could turn a journey involving a major European hub, a connection and the risk of missed bags into one direct flight from the New York area.
I have travelled to Ibiza several times, and it is not simply a party island. Its hotels, beaches, food, UNESCO-listed old town and quieter corners make it a credible premium leisure destination. Why the Airbus A321XLR matters
The significance of the Airbus A321XLR is not simply that a narrow-body aircraft can fly farther. It is what that capability allows airlines to do with their networks.
A large widebody works brilliantly between major cities with deep year-round demand. But it can be too much aircraft for a route linking a major hub with a smaller leisure destination, particularly outside the busiest weeks of summer.
The A321XLR offers a different proposition: long-haul capability in a smaller aircraft. United can use the feed from its Newark hub to assemble enough passengers for Ibiza, Valencia or Marseille without needing to fill hundreds of seats on every departure.
This is why the announcement feels like a pivotal moment, rather like Qantas Project Sunrise, but solving the opposite network problem.
Project Sunrise is about connecting major cities across extreme distances with ultra-long-haul flights. The A321XLR is about using right-sized capacity to connect major hubs with thinner long-haul destinations. One pushes the limits of distance; the other expands the number of city pairs that can realistically support nonstop service.
Both strategies use new aircraft capabilities to redraw the route map.
What will United’s A321XLR be like onboard?
United has branded its new aircraft “Born to Explore.” Despite being a single-aisle Airbus A321XLR, it will have a distinctly premium-heavy configuration.
According to United, the aircraft will offer 32 premium seats:
20 United Polaris suites with privacy doors
12 United Premium Plus seats
Economy Plus seating with extra elbow room and access to a shared table across an open middle seat
4K OLED entertainment screens with Bluetooth connectivity
Free Starlink Wi-Fi for MileagePlus members

United says this represents 16 more premium seats than its Boeing 757-200.
The presence of proper Polaris suites is particularly important. This is not being designed as a basic short-haul aircraft stretched across the Atlantic. United is positioning it as a genuine international product for routes where premium leisure and business demand can help support the economics.

The fuselage may be narrower, but the onboard product, not the number of aisles, will decide whether passengers consider it a compromise.

The A321XLR is only part of United’s expansion. Starting in March 2027, the airline plans to add 10 international cities across Europe and Asia.

United says eight of these cities will not be served nonstop from the United States by any other US airline. The airline has added 58 international destinations to its route map since 2017 and says it now flies to more than 160 international destinations.
It is also adding Los Angeles–Osaka, Washington Dulles–Milan and Denver–Paris, while restoring San Francisco–Tel Aviv.
Sardinia and Sicily show that island demand is changing
Ibiza is not United’s only Mediterranean island bet. Newark will also gain seasonal services to Olbia in Sardinia and Catania in Sicily, both operated by Boeing 767-300ER aircraft.
Newark–Olbia is scheduled to begin on 27 May 2027 with three flights per week, followed by Newark–Catania on 28 May with four weekly flights.
These routes suggest that US demand for direct access to Mediterranean leisure destinations is no longer being treated as a niche afterthought. United is committing widebody aircraft to both Italian islands, while using the smaller A321XLR for Ibiza.

Newark to Marseille opens another useful gateway
The new daily Newark–Marseille route begins on 4 June 2027 using the Airbus A321XLR.
Marseille gives US visitors direct access to Provence and the Mediterranean coast without connecting in Paris or another European hub. A daily frequency also makes it one of the most practically useful additions in the announcement.

Will Americans really fly nonstop to Ibiza?
I think the route has a credible audience, particularly during the summer.
Ibiza combines global name recognition with a trip that is currently inconvenient from the United States. Removing a connection makes the island substantially easier for New York-area travellers to consider for a honeymoon, luxury break, group holiday or wider trip around Spain.
The service is also four times weekly rather than daily, which appears appropriately measured for a seasonal leisure market. Newark’s connecting network gives United access to passengers beyond New York, while the premium-heavy A321XLR gives it several different fare products to sell.
That does not guarantee success. Seasonal routes are exposed to sharp peaks in demand, and some passengers may dislike a single-aisle aircraft for an overnight Atlantic crossing. But this is precisely the kind of market the A321XLR is designed to unlock: desirable, long-distance and potentially profitable, but not necessarily large enough for a daily widebody.

long-haul no longer has to mean a widebody
United’s 2027 expansion marks a change in what a long-haul network can look like.
For decades, transatlantic growth was largely built around major cities and large aircraft. The A321XLR gives airlines another tool: connect a powerful hub directly to a smaller destination, sell a premium product and match capacity more closely to demand.
Ibiza is the attention-grabber, but Luxembourg, Toulouse, Valencia and Marseille demonstrate the wider strategy. If these routes work, they could encourage United and its competitors to examine many more European cities that currently rely on connecting traffic.
That is why Newark to Ibiza matters. It is not only a surprising new holiday route. It is evidence that the economics and technology of long-haul flying are changing and that the next important transatlantic destination may not be another major capital.
