The Famous Staircase Is Still There. The Mood Is Still… Very Virgin.
If you’ve ever flown Virgin Atlantic from Heathrow Airport Terminal 3, you’ll know the moment. That staircase. That slow little walk upwards like you’re about to enter somewhere exclusive, glamorous, and just a bit theatrical.
As an ex-Virgin Atlantic crew member, I’ve been up those stairs more times than I can count. Sometimes I got let in if the lounge was quiet. Sometimes I absolutely did not. Nothing humbles you faster than being sent straight back down again.
And yes, this lounge genuinely has history for me. I was even a movie extra there during filming (The Ghost Writer). So I’ve seen the Clubhouse in full swing, in quieter moments, and back in its earlier jacuzzi-and-hair-salon era.

Now Virgin Atlantic has unveiled the first phase of its Heathrow Clubhouse refurbishment, with a refreshed Gallery, new work pods, a reimagined cinema, a new invitation-only Royal Box, and wellness pop-ups including Somadomes and Secret Spa treatments.
On paper, it sounds like a proper upgrade.
In reality? Some of it is brilliant. Some of it still feels like Virgin is clinging to an old identity that no longer lands the way it once did. If you’re searching for the best airport lounge Heathrow Terminal 3 has to offer, this is the Plane Honest truth about the Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse.

What’s Actually Changed
Virgin has introduced:
A redesigned Gallery with improved runway views
New work pods, The Townhouse and The Manor
A refreshed cinema space
The invite-only Royal Box
Wellness additions including Somadomes and Secret Spa treatments
This is clearly Virgin trying to modernise the airport lounge Heathrow Terminal 3 experience.
And to be fair, parts of it do feel like a step forward.

The Wellness Shift Is the Real Upgrade
The strongest addition here isn’t the design. It’s the direction.
Virgin has installed three Somadomes, immersive wellness pods combining light therapy, sound, binaural beats and guided meditation. The idea is simple: 20 minutes to reset before a flight.
That might sound like a gimmick, but it’s actually one of the most relevant upgrades they’ve made.
Heathrow is intense. Busy, noisy, overstimulating. For a lot of travellers, especially neurodivergent passengers, that pre-flight experience can be draining before you’ve even boarded. This is the first time the Clubhouse feels like it’s responding to how people actually travel now.
There’s also a partnership with Secret Spa offering treatments like express massages, facials and manicures, using brands such as OSKIA and OPI, alongside some K-beauty products tied to Virgin’s Seoul route launch.
Less excess. More reset.

The Gallery & Work Pods: Where This Actually Works
This is where the refurbishment starts to make sense.
The work pods aren’t just functional, they’re themed around Virgin’s music heritage:
The Townhouse, Virgin’s original London recording studio
The Manor, their experimental Oxfordshire studio
They’ve added studio-style artwork, proper desks, integrated power and even “on air” signs when the pods are in use.
It’s a nice nod to the brand, but more importantly, it’s practical.
The Gallery has also been reworked and remains the most in-demand space in the lounge. There’s more seating, better layout, and improved views across the runway.
Design details lean into London influences and Virgin’s identity, brass accents, red tones, curated artwork, including pieces from UK artists and even a feature made from the old Vera inflight magazine. It feels more considered. More usable.

The Cinema… Looks Good. But Who Is This For?
Virgin has repositioned the cinema as a more intimate screening space, inspired by Soho members’ clubs.
It includes:
improved acoustics
upgraded seating
Bluetooth headphones
integrated charging
It’s well done.
But realistically?
Who is sitting down to watch something before a flight at Heathrow?
You’re watching your gate. You’re checking boarding. You’re managing time.
It’s a nice idea, but not a particularly useful one.

The Royal Box… This Is Where It Slips Backwards
The Royal Box is Virgin’s new VIP space.
It’s invitation-only, private from the rest of the lounge, and centred around what they call the “Cabinet of Curiosities” a rotating offering of treats, champagne and surprise elements.
It’s designed to feel theatrical. Exclusive. A bit indulgent.
But this is where the tone starts to feel off.
There’s still a strong sense of the old Virgin brand here, bold, provocative, slightly mysterious. The kind of thing that once felt edgy and different.
Now it just feels a bit dated. A little seedy.
Luxury has moved on. It’s quieter, more transparent and the Royal Box doesn’t quite reflect that shift.

Can You Use the Virgin Lounge with Premium Economy?
No.
If you’re searching for Virgin Atlantic lounge access Premium Economy, the answer is still no, you won’t get access with a standard Premium ticket.

If you’re flying Premium Economy, Economy, or just don’t have status that doesn’t mean you’re stuck at the gate.
